If you've been reading my journal thread, you know I'm having a difficult time finding a way to mitigate my autistic son's meltdowns. The puppy didn't work; he began to resent him. People have suggested swimming (can't until seizure-free for 3 months), music, candles (can't because he's fascinated with fire) and fish.

But it suddenly occurred to me: do a 75 hour (half credit) course on Self-Introspection. Put it under the Elective "Life Skills". Give him credit for thinking through things, including how he feels during a meltdown, if he gets any warning signs, and what he wants to do, listen to, think, taste or smell to help stop the meltdown in its tracks.

He would do this on Fridays, two assignments for each Friday. I would help him talk things out, and explain the questions if he doesn't understand them. Here are a few questions I'm assigning ... thoughts?

Who are you? A spirit in a body, a body with a spirit, a thing in the world? Who?

When mom tells me you that you had a meltdown, how do you feel? Did you know you were having a meltdown when you were in it? Can you tell when you're about to have a meltdown?

What would help you stop a meltdown before it gets out of control? Taste, smell, sound, touch ... what?\

Those are great questions :)

Hopefully if he can get a better sense of himself he can get more control over himself.
