1976 was a record breaking year for snow, too....

aint that right. i remember being out at the bus stop with a windchill of like -20*... no delays no cancellations nada. i guess we were tougher back then

actually i just called my Good Neighbor at work in a panic to see if her kids were being sent home or what. the roads are just plain bad. she said it took her 1.25 hrs to get to work - over twice as long as normal.

Monday and Tuesday were snow days here, we really did not get much snow, but the blowing winds caused severe driving conditions, not to mention 4 foot snow drifts in front of my chicken coop door, that needed to be plowed out three times. We have more snow days down here in S. Ont than we did in N. Ont I think the main reasons are--the windand farmers fields cause white out conditions, whereas up north the trees blocked alot of the wind, also the tempsdon't get as low, so there is alot of slush, whereas up north the highways were snowpacked for most of the winter. Plus people knew how to drive in the winter up there. Down here, people panick at the lest amount of snow. pathetic.

As for the 1976 storm, i remember that too. I had to walk home from school that day, a walk that normally took me 20 minutes, took me over 1 1/2 hours.

You Southerners HAVE school delays because of ice and snow?? Really? I'm sorry! That cracks me up!

Sure---the state of NC has 2 snow plows and 1 truck that throws slag.
seem they are never around when ya need one!

and the SOUTH gets more snow then I would have ever believed. Before I moved to NC I didn't think they even got snow in my area. Worst snows come from the South....when Atlanta gets snowed in.....who would think Atlanta would get some of the worst winter storms around...I never thought that

I went to High School in Rochester NY. 157 inches of snow sophomore year. NO SNOW DAYS for us back then, in the dark ages!

Here, if it says it might snow, there is a delay.

You all have had miserable weather. I simply cannot imagine.

Starting tomorrow, we're gonna have 7 - 10 days of consecutive rain. They are emptying some of the lakes/reservoirs to make room for the run off. Wow...

There were a few years when it seemed every winter, right around mid February, we'd get a bad snow storm. And while 76 might have been bad, it was just one in a series of bad winters. The last bad one for awhile was 81 (I think). That was the 1st time I can remember having the ground covered for all of a month.

I remember '76...we had the same snows here in the mountains. We lived in the county next to me then, where Ol' Sew and Sew now resides. The snow covered our entire house up to the roofline and we had to dig a hole to get out....I remember sliding down the snow shute to get into the porch.

A picture of our house made it into the Tucker County history books. They never closed school, that I can recall. They very rarely had school closings back then.

They did, however, close school that year during ramp season due to the bad smell throughout the school.

My cousins went to Brighton High. Were you in Rochester itself? Just curious. It would be weird if you knew them!! I was born in Rochester, live in Henrietta (surprise, surprise!!) till I was three then moved to CT. I don't remember the snow..
