That would depend on the situation and I'm not sure I understand what exactly you're asking. Yes I know about the handful of books, but 'why' comes to mind. Are you saying in a SHTF? or moving? or???

Anyway, I guess my answer would be the same no matter what...

already have....
1. Bible
2. Back to Basics-covers a little of everything survival-garden, animals, building, sewing, candles, canning, etc
3. Old cookbooks that are more 'make from scratch'
4. Scout/survival manual
5. Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening-that includes SOME information about raising livestock animals.

don't have but want.....
1. book about identifying weeds/herbs/flowers & their uses (or what they mean for the soil, etc)
2. I used to have a great older book about animal husbandry & including typical problems & how to treat...BUT....it must have gotten lost or picked up by gremlins, cause I can't find it now that I want it :p

The Hitch hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Where else are you going to get fantastic advice like...

"..a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

or "Don't Panic!"

Plus it includes the recipe for pan galactic gargle blasters!

The books I'd want with me are:

1. Bible
2. Backyard Homestead
3. Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook (it's from 1978 and has a LOT of from scratch cooking - and it was passed down in my family, even survived a house fire. Was given to me when I married by my mom). It also gives detailed instructions on how to quarter a chicken for frying, etc.

DUH! So that's what happened to my brain. My daughter gave me the book - I couldn't keep up, so she gave me audio tapes. I fell asleep every night listening for weeks. I'm pretty sure I absorbed some of that fantastic advice.

Quail - Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook - I got mine in 1966 when I married for the first time. It's seen me through 3 husbands (the last one even uses it). It's falling apart and I can't make myself buy a new one.

I just bought Backyard Homestead and I love it.
