I am! I'm restless, and I'm feeling like a caged animal.

I've never really had a hard time dealing with winter, not really, but the last couple days, and especially today, I've been - I don't know how to describe it - but I have this desire to just pack up and go somewhere.

somewhere warm.

But.....

I have all these dang animals.

I keep telling myself I won't feel this way once spring/summer is here, that once the warm weather (or at least warmer) I'll forget all about being stir crazy and caged, and the auction will be picking up and so will sales.....

and when it greens up it will be beautiful here.....

but at this very moment, I'm going nuts. There's a small inner part of me that is saying "this farming thing stinks" and I am almost to a point - i did say almost - where I'd just give up everything - the chickens, the pigs, cattle - all of it - just to live in a house, with a small yard that I only have to mow on occassion - with running water - schools within walking distance - like a little culdesac (sp?) neighborhood type thing...sheeoot...I'd almost sign a HOA (again I said almost) as long as it all came in a state where we don't get 2 feet of snow....sweater weather is acceptable....NO SNOW....or at least, very minimal snow.

I know in a few weeks I won't be feeling this way...in a few weeks (hopefully) it will be warming up, the White Death will be melting, and I'll be glad we are still on the farm....

why do they say, "they bought the farm" when someone has gone nuts?! I have the farm, and I want to buy the town! :th

The grass is always greener?

Maybe you need a dose of what you are missing from city life. Whatever that is, go in to town for a day. Re-experience the traffic, the noise, the rude people and the high price of everything along with whatever you enjoy in town. Betcha on the way home when you get past the "crowded" areas you will sigh with relief to be heading home.

I don't think I can fully explain it, it's not that I like "town living" or having neighbors so close you can spit in their window...
and it's not that I don't like farming and everything we have...I don't know what it is.

I just know I feel off.

I get to feeling that way about Arizona, but for me, it's the perpetual sunshine :hide It isn't as wonderful as some may think, so please don't throw stuff at me! :hide It gets downright hot here, and the humidity from about July into September is really going to be intersting with my hot flashes this year :th I don't look forward to it. Winter here is, well, lacking. This year hasn't been too bad - we've gotten more rain than any other year since I've been here. But I miss trees, I miss mountains that are taller than foothills and covered with REAL snow. I miss walking barefoot across a nice, soft lawn. I miss the ocean, & rivers that actually have water in them. And honestly? I HATE cactus. In fact, when I moved in with DH, I removed every prickliy pear, cholla & if there would have been a sahuaro (highly valued here) I would have gotten rid of it too. I can't just pick up and leave my place either - anyone I would trust to take care of my critters is busy with their own place. We miss out on alot of "special events" because of the lifestyle we chose. BUT, when it comes down to it, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Quail, they have a word for it, or rather 2 words: CABIN FEVER

I get it too. You feel confined! both pysically and otherwise by the chores that need doing and just cannot be left undone, ie animals and kids need feeding etc.

Is it possible for you to go out for a walk. I don't know what the weather is like for you today. Bundle up and go outside. Have a snowball fight with your family. Get exercise and be silly. Catch snowflakes on your tongue, get the kids to help you think of something silly to do.
I think this is why my grandmother invented "donut making day" She only did this, when we were couped up inside on those blizzardy snow days!!!

Of course, you can always vent on the SS forum
You know we'll listen and offer suggestions or get silly :gig

I get itchy, antsyinthepantsies like that at times, too. It usually means that I'm in a rut. Winter is the worst time for it, since you can't get out and about to do stuff that feels rewarding and meaningful.

Some things I've done that have helped. Taken an online class that was difficult for me. The intellectual challenge kept me occupied and I learned a thing or two. Here is a link to the MIT opencourseware classes. http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/home/home/index.htm

I also find that getting involved in a project that I've been putting off gets me stimulated and encouraged by my progress. So does doing something with my hands; painting, crochet, breadbaking etc.

Hang in there, it's almost spring.

Quail, I understand how you feel. I haven't left the house since we got that first bad snow almost 2 weeks ago. The only person I have seen is my husband. The only communication with other people has been email and a couple of phone calls. I want to get out and actually see and talk to people. I'm praying this week it won't snow and I will be able to. We are still doing snow removal today and we should be done. Now they are predicting more snow on Monday evening into Tuesday. Not sure how much though.

Between animal chores and snow removal, that is all I'm doing. I'm tired, I'm sore and I'm sick of being here by myself and doing nothing but work. I just need to get out and see the world (do some grocery shopping) and actually see other humans. Maybe even have lunch with a friend and go up and visit my family. But in the meantime, I feel the same way you do.

Oh, seriously would I trade. Did you know, the Pacific Northwest is having an extremely warm winter? So while the East and South are snowed in, the Winter Olympics are having to delay some events on Whistler (about 130 miles north of me) because it's too warm!

I get some form of stir crazy when the weather stays the same for a long time. So, if it's sunny for two weeks or snowing, or whatever, I go all weird. Is that seasonal affective disorder? Anywho I think it's normal, you just have to find something that helps. For me, it's making things. Soap, sewing, knitting, meals, etc. But even that gets old after a while. Right now I couldn't sit in front of my sewing machine to save my life. So I've been hanging out on SS more. It'll pass, and you'll be happy to have what you do. I'd (almost!) kill for property, animals, and country living. *siiiiiiiiiiigh*

Oh, on a side note, I've found that cities make me incredibly claustrophobic. The tall buildings, the people, the gridlock, the smell, the noise... Even Seattle makes me want to RUN. New York City was worse. Ironically, Tokyo didn't bother me. I think it was because our hostel was mostly surrounded by a beautiful park. So when you went outside, you heard trees and birds. Okay, I'll stop now.
