January Jump-Start (Garden Dream and Plan Thread)

I went into our local county extension office last week, and found out they are giving away free apple trees tomorrow for Arbor day. Arbor day is April 27th, but here in Alabama, it is celebrated this year the last full week of Feb. A friend is coming with me. She does not want any trees but any she gets, she's giving to us. We started with 4 fruit trees when we moved here, and added 5 last year. We'd like to add 5 more this year, and 5 next year. FREE is GOOD!

That got me thinking. I looked up Arbor Day, and there's a link to the Arbor Day foundation. For a $10 membership fee, they will send you ten trees.

Also, through the extension office, I found a 3 part class that starts Friday that teaches how to prune and care for fruit trees. I'm sure different extension offices offer different things, but thought I'd throw that out there...

Well... There goes any hope for the spring/fall garden to dry out anytime soon

But on a positive note - tomatoes are up - covers comes off tomorrow. Not bad only 4 days germination. I have go back through my garden log - but 4 days might just be a new record for me

Aren't they cute????? I feel the same way towards baby seedlings like I do about new chicks....so cute and sweet, but soon to be food!

Will have to get some seeds in the ground and into trays this next week or so. Also need to build my hay bale raised bed for spuds soon. Will be planting those about mid-March.

The only seedlings I've got in trays right now are sweet onions....the second batch. The first batch I managed to kill and then grow a whole tray of really pretty grass...don't know how I did that.

I definitely don't have a green thumb.

Ah I'm getting plant envy lol. Still very much winter here. But it's not freezing everyday which is nice (we'll just ignore the fact that it's above seasonal).
Still, I'll be able to start some seedlings next month! Probably in 3 weeks

I have somewhat of a plan..I plan on growing more hot pepper plants for my homemade hot sauce since my family eats it on everything everyday. I also saved seed from my pole beans to grow 100% more then last year to hopefully can.

I started from saved seed Cheyenne spirit echinacea and calendula just to see if the seed would grow and amazingly more seeds germinated then I anticipated.. I’m talking over 100 seedlings so far with more germinating every other day. I would love to sell some just not sure how to go about yet.

I also bought purple echinacea, feverfew ,rosemary and sage seeds that I started the beginning of the month and as of resent last week ..I over did it with the purple echinacea as I see if they continue to germinate like they are I will have way more then I thought I would.

I'll be doing more hot peppers this year also and for the same reason...for making of the fire jam we love so much. Toning down on maters, though, as I've found they trigger my gout.

Planting more spuds and onions as we use a lot of both.

And eat them

I don't know if yins have ever grown sport peppers (the ones on chicago style hot dogs). Here is just one plant it's 6' tall. crazy productive...
