keljonma's Front Porch - Settling in and adjusting

This afternoon, TR and I were upstairs. He was reading his email and I was reading a library book. We heard a noise down in the kitchen and I found some spices knocked off the shelves and the bottom pantry doors open.

It probably slithered into the basement through a crack in the foundation. The good news is that I think it has eliminated our mouse population, as the blocks we put down have only little nibbles off the edges and the traps have been empty.

We live in an old 1880 farmhouse. I'm guessing that some of the plaster wall fell into the basement recently because now there is a 2 1/2 inch hole in the pantry wall (behind my sugar canister). TR has now filled the hole (after we made sure the snake went back into the basement). There are just too many holes in this house, so there is a possibility that the snake will visit us once again...just in a different spot in the house.

The head doesn't look like hognose. TR thinks it might be a Black Rat Snake based on this website

Here is a close up pic of the snake we saw in the pantry. It is hard to see next to that shelf paper I have used.
