My chickens are so funny running after those things. We get some small ones here, certainly man are just hatched. Fresh protein for the hens! When I mow their run, wow, they follow me around -- grabbing bugs I've rustled up. Then they spend a couple days digging thru the chaff looking for others. With their large area, no dirt for them! They have a hard time keeping a dust spot. Since they free range all day, many roam the fields scattering horse manure, etc.

I had a friend that would spread a tarp under her orchard trees every night. In the morning, knowing the routine, the chickens and ducks would follow her out to the orchard and wait for her to remove the tarp and then they would run around scooping up the bugs that had hidden underneath overnight. She said it was like watching a game of PacMan, lol

imagine how fertile your garden would be if you could bury those in it each season... :)

i have fun here watching the bluebirds wrestling the grasshoppers in the gravel at times.
