Wow!!! We have a jersey steer named Sir Loin...
He's super super sweet - we halter trained him as well and he was a bottle calf which helped big time.

Lovin' The Homestead
Our soon to be a mama! Any ideas how to tame her down? She's not nearly as friendly as the calves are and we've only got a couple months before she's ready to milk.
Feeding time!
I'm being good, Mama. Really, I am! Our dog, Nelson, has a really strong herding instinct. We have to work really hard to control it and even then he just doesn't know when to quit. Tonight he did really well not chasing the calves.
Another picture of Nelson. We rescued him from the pound several weeks ago. They told us he was a lab mix, but I'm not sure I believe it. I'm almost convinced he's a Mountain Cur, he even has the bobbed tail. Any other guesses?

I will have to get on my other computer tomorrow to pull up a picture of our first dog,Bear. He was lab and shepherd and had some similar characteristics. He had the brindle coloring without the white chest. Different head shape yet there is something similar. I almost don't dare show DH the pictures. Bear was his first dog and it will really be emotional for him. Maybe tomorrow...

Your Jersey's are beautiful! As for taming momma down, try a bucket of good sweet feed. She will come to that, and start in short strokes...gradually working your hands down her sides. Good luck with her, I hope she calms down for ya.
Now, that beautiful dog. WOW, what a looker. I was thinking Lab/Cur. He sure is a pretty guy!! Could be Lab/ cattle dog. That would explain the coloring, and the bobbed tail. Hmmm, either way, congrats on a great dog!

Those cows look so happy out in your pasture! Nice! Can you tie the cow up someplace in the mornings and give her some feed or do you have a barn that you could put her in? I bet it won't take long and she'll come running!

Lovin' The Homestead
I can't believe it's been so long since I posted anything here. I guess I'll start with some new pictures.
This is Madam Mim. When we got her she was such a witch!! It took a week before I was able to milk her without having to have my DH or FIL help me get her up. When we figured out that she just wanted someone to follow and that she only likes being milked from the right side she turned into a sweet girl.
Our new dog, Jack. He's a big boy!! I didn't realize just how big he is until we got him home, he dwarfs our other two dogs. I'm guessing he weighs nearly 65-70 lbs. I've got to take him to the vet next week to be fixed so I'll find out then
My oldest, Jacob, and his 4H heifers Mary & Minnie. The one in front of him is a registered Hereford on loan to us from the county extension agent. The one behind him is one that was given to us by my FIL out of his herd of commercial cows.
My middle son, Matthew, and his 4H heifer Melody. This is the calf from my first milk cow. She is so sweet and sassy! She fits his personality to a tee,
My youngest son, Sam and his bucket calf, Flubber. Each of the kids raised a bucket calf this summer.
My daughter, Abby, and her bucket calf Jacque.
My bees all disapeared. I don't know what happened. I didn't have any dead bees anywhere around the hives, they had plenty of room and plenty to eat so
I guess they swarmed, but I never saw a queen cell forming. I'll try again in the spring.
The fall garden is almost planted, everything but the lettuce. The bed where the lettuce is going was taken over by a huge mound of fire ants so until I get rid of them the lettuce is going to have to wait. I hate fire ants!

I'm pretty good at guessing dog breeds from my rescue background. While it would be better to have more pictures, I'm going to venture a guess that your brindle "lab mix" from the humane is a catahoula/lab. That would account for the herding instincts too, catahoulas herd.
The second dog looks like either hound/pit bull or lab/pit bull, it is a little hard to tell from the photo what kind of hair he has. I'm not sure which dog you wanted the breed guess. But I'm more sure that the first dog looks like catahoula/lab than the second dog.
Catahoulas make good farm dogs! And everyone knows labs are generally awesome. Does he have a spotted tongue?
