Meriruka's Tales - need advice on squash

Do you have a riding lawn mower? I must tell you, my husband never wanted me to mow our lawn or field. It is wonderful to sit back and have a beer while driving back and forth back and forth. They pretend it's hard work, but one time I volunteered without him knowing. He's sooooo busted. I'm steeling that job all summer.

Oh yes, I've got a riding mower. I think at least two acres here is grass, so a push mower is just not an option.
Can't relax on it though, there are so many tree stumps & holes and obstacles, not to mention last summer there was a copperhead living under a tree branch in the field......I always forgot where the branch was, so I had to stay alert till I found it and went around it. Sometimes the grass gets out of hand, so I'll be mowing grass that's past my knees.....my neighbor bought the exact same mower as mine because he said, "I see what you put that mower through and it still keeps going, so I figure I'll get the same thing and it'll last me forever." Maybe I can get Craftsman to make me a spokesperson like Jared is for Subway?

yeah, I can see two acres taking a bit longer than what we have. And the snake thing would freak me out.

Oh, yeah I can see the commercial now. Your cruising along and run something over, mower keeps running, cruising along, bump through a big hole, mower keeps running. Cruising along, you get bit by the snake, fall off dead in the 3 foot high grass. Mower keeps running.

WOW! That place is beautiful. I wish we had a place like that. All we have is a small lot with a mobile home that my dad left me and a tornado wrecked 10 acres in desperate need of a bulldozer that we can't afford.

Tankshill, the reality is not far from what you described (except for the snake, so far.)

rebecca, can't imagine what a tornado can do to land, but I bet it's devastating. I've lived in row homes, so having all this space & buildings is amazing. Even more amazing is that it all cost less than half of what I paid for the row home. What was I thinking? Should have done this much earlier in life.

Now see, you never mentioned the dang snake! Bees/wasps/hornets/yellow jackets I can help with, but snakes, NO. Get a big stick, with sharp pointy things, and whack the crap out of it til it dies!!!

My tom has begun trying to mate his girls. I was horrified to witness this and to discover he's doing it wrong! He just stands on here back, smooshing her flat to the ground - head, tail & wings all flat in the dirt. The others gather around & try to peck her head while she makes these sad cries that break your heart.

It was awful and I have no idea what to do about it.
This is my first time owning turkeys. Is this normal? Will he get it right before he really injures her?
I'm used to roosters who hop on & flip up the tail feathers and do their thing in seconds. This tom was just standing on her for what seemed like an eternity!

i'm giggling b/c when i saw our tom, TurkZilla, 'treading' on dear little Bramble i just about burst into tears!!! then he was obviously 'doing it wrong' so i started yelling for my hubby. who said, just leave them alone.

so i did.

and they figured it out.

if you are really concerned you can go and boot him off her. but come to think of it...thats probably why TZ hates me now.

and yes its totally different from how the rooster 'gets it on' with his ladies. ahem.

(now, if she lays there in a heap when he's done, is significantly smaller, or he pecks her so she's bloody... get the broom and charge right out there)

There's no way she could get away, it must feel like she has a house on her back!
Thanks for letting me know this is normal, I hope I can get used to it before I run out there and break his neck.
