Wow. I'm really saddened to hear that. All I can say is give it time. Maybe that was just his way of having to deal with the permanency of leaving.

First off I am glad to hear you enjoyed your vacation.
Second about your hen.. Is she still laying? Have you felt her up to see if maybe she could be egg bound. Not sure if this affects walking but it just came to mind.
Third I am sorry about your employee. We have a young man who used to come to our house and help on occasion when he was in town. We had to start turning him away a couple years ago due to money issues. Mainly lack of it on our part.
It kinda sounds like something else is going on. Maybe he just feels a bit dejected, rejected, that you can no longer employee him. Maybe he really does not have another job lined up and is stressed out. From my experiences in hiring day labor, most seem to be really good guys looking to take care of their families. Maybe thats his worry. I understand how you could be upset by all this.
Oh and 18 bucks and hour is almost twice what the guys down here get paid.

So sorry! I watched a coworker unravel on our supervisor one day. She quit of her own accord but I don't think it was an easy decision. We were a small office and got quite close. This woman went a little nuts one day, a few days before she was supposed to leave. She called the supervisor names, swearing and rude. She threw her key at her. Then she walked over and hugged me goodbye and left. So weird. She had some issues in her home life that probably contributed. It was really hard to watch. And we all weren't even as close as you were to your worker.

Don't know what to tell you about your hen. Just keep taking care of her as you have. There are so many things that can go wrong with them. It is hard to tell. I can tell you that even a vet cannot tel without expensive blood tests and such. I have taken my chickens to a wonderfull vet in the past.
The one thing he tought me was how to give them fluids subcutaneously, which often helped a chicken recover. So keep those fluids going.

I am sorry about your issue with the worker. It does sound as if he is really upset about something else and is taking it out on you.

i was thinking your hen was egg bound too... is she pooping? is her vent messy? can you feel her belly - hard? soft?
i'm sure you've heard this on BYC but sometimes there can be a broken egg internally in a hen.

we have a couple internal layers that are still getting around but we'll have to cull them. i have one that barely has a prolapse that i've kept going for over a year. i declared her imminent death 3 times but she's still out there...
the thing with your worker is tough.. and you don't have any idea what the real situation was.... its too bad it ended that way. but it sounds like he is an adult and can choose to get mad and stomp away. just a heartbreak for sure.

Today I'm unpacking boxes and bags of clothing, since the walk in closet is now ready for use. What a tear jerker it has been to toss my dozens and dozens of Talbots outfits (pants, sweaters, jackets, blouses, skirts), some Liz C. clothing, some Jones New York pieces, and a few Nordstroms articles into a growing pile of either yard sale or donation to a thrift store. Yet, even tho bittersweet, its also slightly uplifting to not have to worry about getting dressed up again.
I loved all those clothes, some of them still had their price tags on them, and they are all in impeccable shape. But I didn't love the various jobs that required the clothes. OK, be done with it. Off they GO!!!!!!!
The worst part is that they are all size 8 and I'm now a 14 in WalMart sizing. An extra 30+ lbs sure makes a difference in what I can and will wear. Where will I find the will power to begin to lose the blubber and get back into at the very least my old shorts and tops and tanks and peddlepushers (whatever they are called nowadays). I love those clothes too!
On the home front, I've got most of my garden in, either from seed or seedlings that I started myself. It went from too cold to plant to mid 80's this week. Weird weather! I planted several varieties of tomatoes, several varieties of beans, cow peas, regular peas, green bells, seeded some radish, green onions, and herbs. I have to make or come up with some more creative tomato cages, and some trellis for the beans. I scrounged some railing from the dump that some of the beans will climb.
I ran outa room for my squash and melons, so I found some other places not within the garden walls, to plant them. If I can keep the wild rabbits, our dogs, and chickens from destroying these baby plants, then I'll have something to harvest in a couple of months.
I can't wait to can something, but at this rate, it'll be months before I have anything of quantity to work with.

That is kind of bittersweet about the clothes. I have two dressy work outfits still, just in case and several jackets. The jackets work great for all sorts of things including with jeans to the farmers market
Nice that you got to plants your starts and seeds. We have had the wildest weather here. Our field is still not plowed
And as frustrated as we are about that, we have had our hands full with our baby goats anyway.

MR, I never really had that change in careers. I do have a closet full of fancy clothes I seldom war. I have to admit my favorite shopping recently has been at good will. I don't feel guilty about getting those dirty in the garden. Maybe if you have a consignment near by you could make a little cash. 
Glad to hear your garden is coming along. With this heat spell things should really get growing.

Well, I know how that goes.....I have a policy that if I haven't worn it in a year then it can go. I hate it but I just don't want to keep a bunch of stuff I'll never wear. My "uniform" as of late is jeans or jean shorts and a t-shirt. My last job was at Hooters so all my work clothes are just tank tops and shorty shorts that I couldn't even get one leg in right now....it's amazing what 5 years and 2 kids will do to your body
