Finally time to come over from BackyardChickens.com ... hiya! About time, right? I recognize some of you, like Wifezilla!

Working towards self-sufficiency in the midst of crises of the family, financial, and health natures.

Edited on August 9 to add questions/answers:
1. What state/province/country are you in and what is your climate like? USA, Zone 5, Colorado Plains, very hot, very cold, blizzards, heat waves, and always MASSIVE huge winds.

3. How would you define self sufficiency? Being prepared for anything, like blizzards, power outages, zombie invasions, decline of the economy, etc. Providing for my family without depending on the trucking system to fill up the grocery shelves.

4. What would you do with your spare time if you had any resources you needed? READ!

13. Can you drive a farm tractor or a semi? If I had to, I'm sure I could learn.

14. Do you make crafts or useful items? Would you want to teach others how to do these? I am learning how to make soap, cheese, and candles. Lots more on my list. Not good enough to teach anyone how.

15. Can you have legally livestock where you are at? Do you have any? What kinds? Yes, almost everything is around us... donkeys, horses, alpaca, pigs, etc. We have goats, chickens, and a dog.

17. Do you like to garden? If so, what do you enjoy growing? I do but I'm not very good at it. Brown thumb.

22. If you could create a degree and curriculum, what would you major in and what classes would you take? Would love to do herbalism / homeopathy.

24. Are you interested in herbal medicine? See above.

25. If you could live any place you choose, where would it be? Durango, CO

28. Are your family or friends also interested in self sufficiency? Nope. All but one think I'm nutso.

29. Do you like to cook? No, but I do. Are you interested in whole foods and natural foods? raw milk? farm fresh eggs? Use as much natural stuff as possible. Have our own goats and chickens so you can figure out my answer!

34. Do you have solar panels? Plans to use solar energy? Wish wish wish wish

36. Have you ever lived completely off grid? For a week, in a cabin, on a mountain, in a blizzard. Would you like to? Uh, yup.

So here's a little intro ...

I live with my hubby of 4 years and my 14 year old son in a beautiful home on the Colorado plains. We have only 2 acres, but about 65 chicks/chickens and 4 goats (with 2 due to kid any day now). My son recently started having seizures so we're learning about epilepsy, and are working to get a service dog (puppy ... to be trained to be certified for autism and epilepsy). I homeschool, and try to garden and dehydrate as much as possible, although this year I probably won't have the time or energy.

Guess that's it for now.

Hi BBH: No, it's not easy. Thanks for the hug. They are in short supply these days. My son isn't real happy with me right now, always watching him (I try to not let him see me), but these seizures can happen any time and the meds haven't kicked in yet (another 6-8 weeks). I usually have to hurry with my outdoor chores, or make some excuse for him to come out with me.
