What is a mud cup?
Mason bees seal their egg tubes with mud. Those tea cups are meant to be little bird feeders, but I see no reason you can't put mud in it for the bees :D

I think mason bee housing is a great way to get your feet wet on bee keeping. Then when you feel like things are more manageable, you could move on to top bar hives and try to attract some wild honey bees. At least that I what I am going to do.

I found this mason bee hive on Gardener's Supply website. Does anyone know if this would be something that might work?

We looked into doing bee keeping but are still feeling so overwhelmed with what we are already doing that I just don't feel like I can add one more thing to our extremely long list of things to do.
I just ordered this exact house this morning! How funny. Self-sufficient minds think alike, I suppose. ;)
Mason bees and some mason bee housing options are also discussed here: http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4205
