ETA: did you know that purslane is one of those weeds that says - "Hey, This Soil Is Fertile!"

I just found out it was edible, yay! Got yellow dock too, and I think chickweed & stinging nettle. That's really cool about it saying the soil is fertile. The funny part keljonma, is that its all around the house, under the trampoline, around the fence line, at the forest edge... but not in my garden area or not as much. I'm going to have to rethink my garden placement next year. I'm planning on letting the purslane & yellow dock go wild while I pull up the actual troublemakers. Thankfully, the chickweed & stinging nettle are along the ditch, outside my yard. I don't have to explain to my mom why I'm letting that grow. If she had her way, I'd have a suburban landscape.

Well, things have been busy around the McHousehold. The washing mashing has developed a leak, so towels & dirty clothing were flung with abandon around the utility room. On the floor to sop up the water that is. I got it pulled a little away from the wall, but I squashed my hand pulling it out and got frustrated. There is just too much stuff in the room. We need a purge, and a shed. DH is going to pull it the rest of the way out and see if he can pinpoint where it is leaking so I can see if I can fix it. Its weird, I'm the handyman and he's the chef.

I harvested some basil & made pesto to freeze. I put it in ice cube trays so I can pop them out tonight & put into a freezer bag.
I found a spot under my cabinet that stays around 70 degrees, so I made up a small batch of pickles to ferment & put them under there. So far, fermentation is working and they smell like, well, pickles

My second batch of cheese wasn't nearly as tasty as the first, but I know what I did wrong, so thats okay. I didn't let the curds sit in the whey long enough before I started it draining. Thats what I get for being in a hurry Its still edible, but I think I'm gonna mash in some minced garlic & a little more salt for flavor. I can't wait for my rennet & culture to come in

The plants are looking fabulous, I swear I can hear the corn growing. I made up some Garlic fire spray with eggs. Hopefully it will work on both the deer & the aphids. We didn't have any raccoon offal, but we did have a roast at the bottom of the freezer that was too freezer burnt to eat. We took that out to the corner of the yard & staked it to the post. Definitely makes bambi nervous
Anybody know how to get rid of grasshoppers? Tons of little babies jumping around my garden & yard. The chickens are happy about it, but some of the plants are not.

Speaking of deer, my dad was bush-hogging this weekend and spotted a fawn laying in the grass. It was happily asleep and mom must have been nearby, cause dad went back a couple hours later & it was gone. I'm just glad he saw it in time to stop. Whew

Moseying around at lunch while eating my sandwidge and I discovered a huge pile of urbancrete. Best part is, its in nice, small, mostly square sections. Walkway! Garden Edging! Shed Floor!

Now I gotta find out who owns it so I won't be stealing. I'll be providing a service for free
I doubt they are going to do anything with it, its covered with at least 2 years worth of dead vines, plus this year's growth.

I looked over my spices & herbs last night and I really need to make a trip to Jackson and stock up at the whole foods store. OS much cheaper and you actually get to smell or sample the herbs before you purchase. Easier to get fresh stuff.

Ha! The last time I went, I took DH with me. I had about 15 different baggies with a couple of ounces in each. He was following me around nervously so I asked what was wrong. The price on the jar is for a lb. of the product, he was thinking it was going to end up costing us an arm and a leg just to do a fill in shop. We got to the checkout and the total was less than the per lb cost of any of the jars. The look on his face was priceless

I assume you are talking about Rainbow. I work right around the corner from there and love the place. Let me know if you decide to make a run. Maybe we can meet up.

I'm working on it.
Will have to be a weekend, this one and next one are tied up. SIL is getting married in Hot Springs next weekend, and she's making it a 4 day family reunion since we all live far apart. So for that, I have to predator proof the coop & get long term feeders & waterers made. My mom will check on them, but I don't want her to have to do more than drive back there & look. Its too hot for her to be outside much/doing lifting & such. I break into a sweat before I leave for work in the mornings...
A trip to Jackson is a day long event for us. We like to make the most of any trip over 30 miles. We'll take the kids to the museums & eat sushi or Indian.

I know exactly what you mean about breaking into a sweat. Can yo believe the temps already this year.

I know what you mean about making every trip over 30 miles count. With the cost of gas going back just getting back and forth to work can kill a budget.

Did you by any chance get to bring the kids up for the dinosaur exibit last year? I keep waiting for it to come back around. It was awesome.

We did, X-man was scared spitless for a little while, but we got him warmed up to it. Had a blast after that.
DD on the other hand is an adventurer & a drama queen. She was all over it "OH WOW! Mama! Come look!!!" at decibal levels only a 6 year old can achieve.
Got any idea when the next "Live Village" is going on at the ag museum? THATS where we want to go.
