Our AC unit just died :/ UPDATE!

I feel for ya too. We just got window ac. It was nearly 100 in the house and 95 outside. I was trying to cook and pouring sweat. Dh woke up and made some remark about food not being done and I nearly ripped his head off. He came home the next morning with a cheap window ac and a swimming pool. Maybe someone you know has an old window unit that they would let you borrow.

Small window units in a couple of bedrooms to at least sleep at night. Couple hundred bucks at most.

To cool off quickly and cheaply, run cold water over your wrists. It will cool your body quickly. Play with that concept with ice. Warming yourself in winter use warm water.

110 here yesterday and the day before. No way am I going without AC during record breaking heat.

I used to have one of those home warranties- it was pretty cheap- about $35 a month- and they would come and fix anything that broke, and if they couldn't fix it, they would replace it. I got new furnace that way ; and a range top. Totally worth the money, I thought.

:lau I took my deep fryer on the porch to cook last night, and DD ironed her skirt for church out there too. I am not heating up the house with cooking!!!

Folks, I'm sayin I can't even afford a little window unit right now. I can't afford a $20 part if that is what it is  I'm BROKE LOL! I plan on taking some scrap off this week, maybe that will be enough to try to call a repairman, but if not...it's a waiting game and socking back every extra dollar until we can get it done. :th

I guess I needed ideas on how to keep cooler in the house. I may try to rig up a swamp cooler type deal or misting fans, or something, and do all the cooking outside for a while. I have an outlet on the front porch and a table out there, so not a huge issue to cook outside. I have a fryer and an electric skillet and of course the old stand by Crock pot....so...

I've looked on several websites for troubleshooting guides and they are SO vague :barnie We tried it again las night and it did the same thing :/ Come on, run for 5 seconds, shut off
From everything I DID actually understand of the troubleshooting, it could be the motor, or the whatchamaflidget(forget the techie name) or the thermostat. If I can find the other thermostat we can try that for free :D Beyond that...the motor is about $50 and the other part is about $35, neither of which I have laying around, and that does not include labor if needeed. We are pinching pennies already and still coming up short weekly/monthly as is. :barnie I'm ll for DIYing it when I figure out WHAT is messed up on it. Beyond that...I'm dealing with what we have :hu

It's not a HUGE deal, just frustrating *sigh* Thought someone here might be able to diagnose the problem or have experience with HVAC. I'll work on it tomorrow. Today, I'm going to church and spending Father's day with the Father's in my life.

Hope all you guys have a great Father's Day!!!

Thanks!

When our ac died last year, I went to bed with an ice pack wrapped in a towel. Helped me stay cool so I could at least fall asleep. It worked really well.

The troubleshooting guides can be iffy. Yes, it can be this, this, or that. I never got much use from them, but prefer forums where people can really help you narrow down the problem. And if ever you vet not-so-good advice, or someone forgets an important point, on an active forum you can pretty much count on someone stepping in with more info.

Like I said, mine was a free fix this year.

I hope you manage to cool off!!!

I feel for you, WBF. I'm going without A/C by choice, but it's not very easy during this triple digit heat wave. I just stay in the shade most of the day, eating salads or sandwiches, and drinking lots of cold water. At night i sit in front of a fan with a wet t-shirt on and all the widows open. The ice pack pillow sounds like a great idea. Also, putting some ice water in a mist bottle and spraying it on you helps.

If you have a crock pot you could cook some meals in it.. I cook chicken in it outside all the time..

OK EVERYBODY PRAY!!!! :lau It's blowing cold right now and has been on for almost 10 minutes :D One thing did say to turn it off and leave it off for about 2 hours for some thingamabobberdohickey to "reset" itself. Maybe that is all it was :hu DH and DD didn't quit playing with it for longer than an hour last night, so it wouldn't have reset then

I HOPE this is what it was and it stays on, because it is 92 here and I am starting to feel a little cranky due to the heat, and the other two whining

ETA: Correction...almost 30 minutes now :woot Temp inside has dropped 4 degrees and is currently 86! Now if it will just go on down to 80 I'll be fine
