yup cherio, im thinking if i breed for Mini Nubians it gives me the milk and pet market, i dont think ill have so many kids that ill have much of a problem selling them but still, i want to make sue to keep my market as open as possible...afterall, the sale of the babies will hopefully balance out the cost of the extra feed through milking time...and a nigi buck would be much easier to handle than a full sized nubian buck.
ive also put some thought into instead finding myself a very small mulit generation Mini Nubian buck somethig in the f2-f3 range to give more consistency to the babies in terms of ear set which can be a problem in first generation mini nubians.

Gotcha!! Mini nubians! I bet mini nubians would probably sell better out here too as opposed to the "kinders" I was thinking of trying. I think folks are partial to those floppy ears!

i know i love them lol, its deifnatly the ears that make me go gaga lol.
i like the mini nubians vs the kinders mostly because the mini nubians will give more milk than a kinder...kinders have a more meaty make up though so it realy depends on what your going for, the difference is nigerian over pygmy, nigi for milk pygmy for meat, so if MILK sells better in your area go for a nigi x nubi, if meat/shrub goats do better in your area go for pygmy x nubi (basis for the kinder, from what im reading theres alot of politics with the kinder and theres even tlak of copyrighting the kinder name so only specific lines would be able to carry it or something...goaty drama lol.
since the nigi and the pygmy are essneitally th same goat taken in alternate directions both mixes will give you a nice goat just depends on the focus.
and it also depends on what you personally like in a goat...i personally feel if your going to be keeping/breeding these animals, you should be breeding for somehting you like/want so that if you do get the odd one that doesnt sell its not THAT much of a big deal...
Its like the GOS pigs, there not the best known breed out there, there a hertidge breed, hard to find and not gonna lie...expensive...because of that it might be tough to market them to the general public...i mean people want pigs for meat, so there looking for cheap grow out pigs for the table...
BUT, i LOVE the GOS, there personalites, there an easy keeper, perfect homestead breed, so...im going to go wiht somehting i LIKE and hope the rest falls into place lol.
Or the rabbits...the rex is a hard to find breed around here and not a breed common for meat (it used to be) but i love them and that makes it worth the extra effort to find them and raise them...even if noone buys them theyll produce plenty of meat and pelts for me and in the end...rabbit is rabbit lol.
Definatly go with whatever YOU like and think would work best for your situation.
being where you are location wise, the nubian is a perfect choice overall anyway (they like warm and dry most of all), and then either of the mini breeds would work being there both from africa so again hot and dry not so much of a problem for them.
a mini nubian woudl require suplimental feed if your looking for heavy milk production where as a kinder wont give you the kind of milk production but would be less on the feed bag...
As a side note...
the neighbors daughters over...guess who has 2 dogs...gues whos 2 dogs were sniffing around my rabbit hutches.

luckily the one that didnt run away when it saw be was wearing a car harness so i assumed it had probably escaped somewhere...and after catching it and walking it round so i could shut her in my fenced area while i asked around the neighbor comes out..."thats my daughters dog"
i wanted to give them a peice of my mind...the usual "she woudlnt hurt them" always comes into play with this guy, and thats fine...im sure the dogs wouldnt have intentionally hurt my rabbits, BUT rabbits are skittish creatures and i already lost one to what i can only assume was a spook...keep your dogs out of my yard...its NOT difficult.
i think what bothered me even more is this puppy must have been all of 12 weeks old...and running aourn doutside unsupervised like that? yeah im in the middle of nowhere, but theres only a yard between our houses and a relitilvly busy 50mph road, (which is used frequently by veyr large trucks and people who think 50 actually means 80...
thankfully since the incident with the neighbors bully last time he hasnt been back (they havent let him off his chain since, i think they realized i wasnt happy, and then after i yelled at the little rat terrier she hasnt been back on my property since either...
but youd think since he obviously knows i dont want other dogs on my property, he would have infomred his daughter of it too...
the fence will go up asap...but still, its frustrating that peopel are seriously that stupid...your gonna let a young, friendly hyper puppy run around neer a busy road comepltly unsupervised? is your dogs welfare REALY that unimportant to you?! i just dnt get it. this is a rural area, a few houses down theres a small cattle ranch and ive HEARD the gunshots over there...i highly doubt hes the kind to catch your dog and put it somehwere safe till you come to claim it...
and theres another ranch to the other side of us a few "yards" down, that im told has "delt" with more than one "stray" in the area...

Thanks Pinky! I have heard there is some drama going on in the Kinder world... I wouldn't be registering any of my goats anyway, so it really doesn't matter to me. I do think that milk and pets would be the primary use for goats out here. I have been trying to find folks out this way that are raising goats for meat, but haven't found any yet...

There are several dogs that wander the area daily. They have learned that this piece of property is a "no go" zone. They all skirt the perimeter, but won't step foot on our property. Luckily we haven't encountered any "problem" dogs.

whent out at 6:45 to "lock" them in for the night...put lilly in first since shes the easy one and i figured poppy would follow once lilly gave call...well turn around to scoot poppy in and theres lilly stoo behind me, shes smella enough to fit between the gaps in the pallet used for the gate (the only palet i didnt add extra boards/use tight slats for lol.
so i opend it back up again and whent and salvaged some scraps laying around to peice it together to secure it for tonight, managed it no problem but will have to take some spare slats and screws to it tomorrow lol.
in the process of doing this i was securing a bungee cord and the danmed thing wasnt hooked secure enough, snapped back and WHACK the hook slaped me HARD on the back of my thigh, i now have a huge welt which i kno will be black and blue pretty quick on the bcak of my thigh...OW...brought a tear to my eye it realy slammed me hard lol.
but yeah will head back out there at 9 with the flashlight and bottles and give them a before bed feed and make sure there tucked in for the night.
tomorrow will be a case of up, feed everyone, give the girls their bottles and then call the guy for disbudding and arrange to head over there, want to get it done earlier in the morning rather than later so theyve got all day to forget about the experience once we get home again. i know thats going to be traumatizing so i just want to get it out of the way for thier sakes.
overall though first day with goats whent pretty well

the 2 dogs havent been back so either shes gone home or shes keeping the dogs in...better stay that way too...
garlic chicken with cornbread stuffing and salad for dinner was delicious, wathcing cheesy horror ovies on Chiller...got cookies for later al in all, pretty good day

i think it hurts more now than it did when i did it lol, its gonna take a few days for the bruise to come out in full, its DEEP...
i feel like such an idiot lol.
9pm feeding whent...well...it whent.
Lilly would take 6 bottles if id let her, she knew when i walked in what i was there for.
Poppy...still none too interested. of a 9oz bottle i managed to empty 1/2 of it...of that im fairly certain at least 1/2 of that was ON me, BUT...she did better with the bottle this time compared to this afternoon so im considering it progress.
if shes still refusing after tomorrows afternoon meal ill head to the co-op and pick up some pritchard nipples and see if a larger/longer nipple does anythign to encorage her.
In other news. my BABY boy Dozer is not a baby anymore...hes started humping this past few days, i realy dont want to neuter him just yet (want to give those growth plates enough time to finnish up so trying to hold off as long as possible) but i also dont want his hormones getting out of hand.
April 1st he'll be 6 months...id like to hold off untill 8 motnhs if possible.
i think hes much too pig-headed to let him go past 8 months lol. best growth and development age is 2 years but i dont think i stand a chance if i let him go that long lol.
