Pink Fox: its Raining...IN MY HOUSE! :/

ok seriously lagging this morning, need to get off my butt and get thigns done but im sat here and theres a beautiful breeze comming through the window and AHHHH lol.

as a side note...does anyone use straw to mulch their veggie beds? i know i need to mulch (specially around my maters) to keep the soil from splashing back...but im not sure what to mulch with...i can get a big bale of straw for $4 at the feed store, and it would be enough to put a good layer on all the beds and still have leftover...
ust want to make sure im not going to be messing up my nitrogen ect...

Im such a veggie newbie! lol
 
well...
today i had my first goaty scare.

took out the lunch bottles at 3pm...and lilly...the little piggy...REFUSED TO EAT and just wanted to lay around.
I was a little freeked out needless to say...
well came in, did some checking online, her "symptoms" fit everything and nothing al at once, poop normals temp normal ect...so i whent back out and just sat with them...
i had to coax her over (not normal for her shes an in your lap kinda goat) but once she came over and i put her in my lap she snuggled down and i just generally rubbed her, i noticed her belly felt a little hard so i gently rubbed and massaged it...

in the mean time i made a break through with poppy who i dont knwo if she was just worried about lilly or what but she not only came over and allowed me to pet her...BUT she then actually initated head rubs by nudging my hand and standing on me, and then she lay next to us with her head in my lap next to lilly!

anywho a good 1/2 hour of belly rubbing lilly with oen hand and rubbing poppies neck and i had to go sort some other stuff, so i put lilly down and no sooner did i put her down but she hopped up and started nibbling on hay...WOOT.
then this evening i took the bottles down for before bed (i took all 3 in hopes lilly woudl be hungry) and guess who was waiting to mob me...yup little miss Lilly was ready and raring for her bottle...she took 2 full 9oz bottles and was trying to mob me for poppies bottle too.

so my guess is she got a belly full of gas, i dont think it was bloat as she wasnt actually bloated but i think she probably ate too much too fast and gave herself a little tummy ache.
but lordy she freeked me out!

anywho.

and yes...Jasper at 5lbs fits ENTIRELY in Dozers mouth...lol

Ruby is fairly certain Dozer has boy cooties...Dozer however is absolutly certain that ruby LOVES him and barking at her is a great way to make her show it...cause you know her biting him on the nose is just her way of saying "i love you"

We use straw on our garlic and strawberries as a mulch and it seems to work just fine. Since our raised beds are new to the area (used to be wooded), we add plenty of bunny gold that is dug in to the river bottom top-soil that we filled the beds with and I don't think we have a problem with nitrogen (or lack of) with using the straw. I do have a layer of newspaper or cardboard between the soil and straw, to help conserve moisture, bring in the worms and keep weeds at bay. Really need to get a soil test kit or just send samples to the ag extension. :/

pinky, I'd put out some baking soda for the girls now if you haven't already. That should take care of some of the tummy issues. Nice pics! They're all so cute! LOVE the stretching pic, priceless :lol:
 
thanks thats the one thing i havent put out for them because i thought i had a box and didnt.
gotta call the feed store and see if they have the di-methox (cocci treatment) in stock and how much, if they have it ill head up there and grab some backing soda from the store while im at it.
figure it wont hurt to deworm them, and obviously its time to make sure that rumen is staying balanced. the breeder said she doesnt add baking soda out untill the kids are 6-8 weeks old, but i think yesterdays issue was definatly some gas so id rather just let them hace acss now to prevent any future issues.
especially on a day liek today where the going to be eating more grain since its raining and rain makes goats melt! so they wont be getting brows today if this weather keeps up lol.

lilly did eat like a pig this morning though so whatever it was shes obviously feeling better lol.
they are officially 5 weeks old now...i will have had them a week tomorrow...wow how time flies!

Today is wet so its reserch day...
need to figure out a more cost effective way of feeding JackJack since parrot food is ungodly expensive. right now he gets pellet and then a mix of cherios dried fruits, peanuts and red peppers...(because thats what i can get locally)
thinking im going to have to start adding more to the dry mix and making him birdy bread, along with pretty much anything im eating that day (assuming no onions added)
 
Next time you suspect gas, just stick a pin in her side. :hide
 
Pinky I have hickory nuts all over the place here. You're welcome to gather some next time you're out this way. I have been told those types of birds love them. :hu Maybe it's worth a shot to get him some free food/toys ;)

lol deb ive got images of a baby goat deflating!
though i have doen something similar in the past in a dog bloat case, you essentilaly sink a LARGE guage needle directly into the stomach to releive the pressure, in bloat prone dogs it can save lives, i assume the procedure is the same for goats in a bloat emergecy but into the rumen instead of the stomach itself? i should look into that.
its not fun, i hesitated ill admit...its no fun sticking giant needels into things.
