Hello!

I'm not sure if this is the best place to introduce myself; apologies if it isn't. Backyard Chickens has suggested that those of us interested in a section on organic chicken raising should show up at Sufficient Self, so here I am! (I'm not really sure of the logic there, unless it is to encourage Sufficient Self members interested in chickens to join at BYC and swell the ranks of organic chicken enthusiasts?) Don't get me wrong, this is an interesting site, and I will endeavour to share what little knowledge I have, if it can help anyone.

Although I'm working toward self-sufficiency in my backyard in Zone 3a (I can hear you laughing already!), my main focus of research right now is raising chickens, of which I have 13 dual purpose hens...planning to raise some more for meat, starting next year. Then maybe rabbits...then maybe I'll cash in my nest egg and get a bigger chunk of land. That's the dream. The reality is I'm still learning to make best use of what I've got. Although it would be nice to wake up one morning with a completely organic and sustainable set-up, it will take many steps to get there.

I like BYC, but many of their members focus specifically on fowl, whereas SS members tend to look at the "whole picture" of self sufficient living. Just a different outlook, and from your comments, I think you'll fit right in!

I think the logic behind that suggestion is that folks who want to raise livestock naturally or organically are in the minority at BYC and in the majority here on the SS.

Naturally, you will find a better discourse on methods, remedies, etc. here than you will on BYC for, as you probably have found out on the BYC, you will receive some very lengthy posts on just why giving meds to your animals is smarter and does not harm them and, in fact, will insure less disease in your flock.......

Here most of us are trying to raise our foods naturally, if not all organically, and are always interested in any new ideas on the subject.

I, for one, have never used medicines on my chickens and don't intend to do so. I have a dual-purpose flock of mostly heritage type breeds.

Freemotion has a great whole grain recipe for her feeding regimen and most of us use ACV as an immunity boost for our flocks.

Try us out.....you just might like us. We are smaller, slower and just have that small town feel that a lot of us country folk really enjoy! :)

If you're looking for a place to find out how to manage that acreage once you get it, then you're in the right place. No matter how you came to be here. I started out on BYC too, because I bought chickens to become more SS!

What breed of dual purps do you have?

Thank you all for your welcomes! I recognize a lot of your names.

Noobiechickenlady, I have 13 Red Sussex cross gals, just about 9 weeks old now.

Beekissed, while I was PMing you, you were anticipating my questions and answering them in this thread! Sorry for cross-timing. I still think an official organic/sustainable presence on BYC might convert a few people, and help swell the ranks at THIS site in return, as they get interested in the bigger picture. Just growing pains, I'm sure.... I'll shut up about that, now. :)

I'll put aside my perplexity at how I came to be here, and just enjoy being here on Sufficient Self.

Thanks, BB! :)

Yep, I'm always trying to drag folks over here who I think might fit right in.......like Free, for instance. Now, can you remember the forum before she came? I can't....she has become such an integral part of this place that it seems she was always here.

And to think I had to drag her over here kicking and screaming....
