When I first took over my "allotment", that is really an extra lot behind the four-plex apartments down the street from me, it had been being gardened by the elderly father of the owner of the apartments. He was pushing 90 and "just could not keep up very well". The apartment owner knew I loved to garden, since I was always growing food in my front yard. He asked me if I wanted to help the old man. I was very excited!

When I went down to talk to the old man the first time he was preparing to prune blackberries. He stopped work and gave me a grilling interview which included sending me home to get my pruning shears so he could inspect them!! I really thought I had bitten off too much, but things worked out. I ended up doing the garden almost completely alone and the following year the old man had moved.

I have to say, that I have never been a huge fan of this SHTF as a natural occurrence scenario. I always thought that people would cook a situation like that to other people. Never that the mother earth would do that to us, but we are having another wave of floods in the southern parts of Poland, but from what I hear it is raining and flooding most of the Europe. I have decided to try to convince my family to try and decrease our imprint on the world, growing some hydroponic stuff all throughout the year. and we do have a somewhat neglected lawn, that we could change into a herb garden which we use ALOT, as well as trying to convince my father to man up, and get a half of a organic raised pig and freeze it. My mother is the one that needs convincing. no matter what happens I already have a lamb reserved to pick up in two months.. but shush :) Boy will that be a ride, when I bring it in, and start putting it into the freezer.

I still need to figure out a good place for the hydroponics and someone who will send me some heirloom tomato and pepper seeds at a decent price :) anyone? :)
 
I would rather pay you tankshill, then some company for the seeds :)
 
Baker Creek is probably the company out there with the most similar ideals to ours. It was started my a young boy (now grown to be a man) who was driven to save the old heirlooms we were rapidly losing.

He has a better collection of seeds than any of us. :)

I still think we need a seed swap section here as well however.
 
Well, we took one step forward and two steps back with my dear mother on the land front... when I started mentioning it, she was all cool and all... Now that I am more active about it, starting container garden, planting one patch of ground that was given to me on my grandfathers allotment garden which I did, mention BUT I thought that I will be getting the whole deal, not just a small piece.

Well there is that flood going on in Poland, which means that the prices of food will be ridiculously HIGH. On the other hand, I started playing a lottery with my spare change, and I mean small amounts. Well, if I were to hit the jackpot I would buy some nice amount of land :) couse thanks to the floods, prices are dropping like crazy... I do realize that the chance of hitting the jackpot are something around NONE. Yet, the amount I spend on the coupons, do not hurt my pocket, so.. why not :) I sent it 3 times and won once a small amount so I am on the green side, just a little bit on that project :)
