Well I did SORT of see rabbits mate once.
It was actually pretty funny.
I was a girl scout leader (brownies, I think they were six) for my DD years ago. They all were really into their pets so we invited the cute new local vet to a meeting and they all brought their hamsters and lizards and turtles and ....rabbits. We actually had TWO rabbits. They were supposed to both be girls, their names were something like FuFu and Daisy....but as you might guess, we discovered they were NOT both girls and FuFu started demonstrating the birds and the bees to the six year olds while the parents burst out LAUGHING.
I was conducting this meeting so it was VERY hard to keep my composure and the girls asked "what is she doing to her?" and watching the young male vet blush and attempt to explain.
I didn't notice any fainting that time but I was mighty THANKFUL it was over in a jiffy.

When my daughter got her cat, we put her in w/her rabbit just to see what they'd think of each other. The rabbit thought he had a new girlfriend! Or, maybe he was confused by her name, Dust Bunny!

I had a pair of rabbits once that really liked each other. I mean *really* liked. All the time. 
It was love at first sight when they met, but I didn't need to see that going on every time I looked outside so I had to break their little wabbit hearts and split them up

Just by their biology rabbits make wonderful prey creatures.
They live fairly solitary lives in the wild, with the occasional warren situation, and reproduce quickly, abundantly and from an early age. Heck they even are easy to kill and skin. They have no "heat" cycle, but actually ovulate on contact. The only problems with that is that in housing them you must keep them separated or pregnant or both.
Even two females in the same pen will exhibit that repeated mating behavior that you describe Java. They also will have phantom pregnancies and issues if they (the females anyway) are kept un-mated without being spade.
I miss keeping my meat rabbits sometimes, but on this tiny lot something had to go and I like my fresh eggs best.

Animals are weird.
We had a 30+ year old gelding that would occasionally mount our mares.

We also had two ponies, a gelded black Welsh mountain and a Shetland mare that were so physically in love that we ended up selling the Welsh due to the constant porn in the pasture and the love calls.

We discovered we have another roo hiding amongst the hens. It has no tail feathers and does not crow so we don't know what his deal is, but he began to show us how manly he is a few days ago. Sheesh, I thought it was a pretty hen. It was weird because the other two males were obviously male at least three months ago. I guess he was a late bloomer.
