Not long ago I read that a number of states (Indiana among them) had passed legislation requiring banks to accept gold and silver at market price for all debts public and private. Many of our state legislatures have become fed up with the FED and they are striking out in different directions to get back to a constitustinal form of government. Montana recently passed a law that any weapon made in or possesed in that state could not be confiscated by the federal government. They basically stated that the bill of rights encouraged them to join the union and any infringement on the bill of rights would cause them to cecede from said union.
Personally I don't think it is a matter of IF the FED colapses it is just a matter of when.

A South Carolina state politician wants the state to develop its own gold and silver-based currency in case the Federal Reserve collapses and hyper-inflation ensues.

WOW ---states having their own currency

hmmm....good or bad?
Where is he proposing to get the gold from to back up their currency? Amazing how stupid politicians are. Looks good until someone thinks about it. They should just secede and grow cotton.

To answer your question. It's a stupid idea. Things get tight and the state politicians start trying to figure out ways to shuck their responsibilities. Look at the different states that are trying to cut or eliminate pension plans for their lifetime employees. People go into government service and most of them earn a lower wage because it pays a good pension. A contract is made between them and the state. Then the politicians decide that's where they should cut expenses and they start circulating false info about govt workers making more than civilians.

Politicians suck.

agree, if things go down hill, food and skills are going to be the currencey of choice...
being able to trade goods/services and barter are slowly dissapearing artforms, and if trouble hits they would be the things id personally be looking for...

Actually, for any town, city or state to have their own currency is a good idea. It keeps the money circulating in their own area which encourages business since it can't be spent anywhere else. How many folks shop at some place that sends the money away? You go to WalMart and the money instantly goes to Arkansas, I don't think they even keep it overnight in a bank located near the Walmart. A lot of the stuff they sell is from China so the money goes from everyone's village to the main offices of the retail chain and then to China. So how does that help the location the WalMart is in? It provides the people there with cheap stuff, but that's all it is - cheap stuff. If you had a local currency and they bought that bag of potatoes from a local farmer, he would then have $$ of local currency to buy pie at the local diner who would then have money to pay the person who sold them the vegetables who would then have money to ... etc. etc. It keeps all the business LOCAL. No more sending money to China or Arkansas. We routinely favor locally produced goods over anything shipped in and are trying to produce things to be sold locally, too. We also barter as we can and swap our excess for our neighbor's excess. If everyone gives from abundance, there is abundance for all.

Show me the money! :D

While I agree in shopping local, how is purchasing from a corporation headquartered in Arkansas any different than one headquartered in Delaware or some other state? It is definitely better than buying from a company headquartered overseas.

Buying only locally produced items (or items only made within our own states' borders), would mean doing without a LOT of stuff. Which in and of itself may actually be a good thing. :)
