If a Rooster starts crowing, but then doesn't do it much anymore, what's that about? Henry is about 6-8 months old and doesn't seem to crow regularly. I think Iv heard him maybe twice? :/

Also why doesn't he try and mate with his own breed!!! Why does he pick the smallest chook in the pen to go after every single morning! They are penned seperately and when I let them out to free range she bolts and he lumbers after her in his big clumsy Cochin manner  .

Then he turns and looks to the female Cochins as he never cashes the little one, they peck him as if to say bugger off and that's the end of his efforts for the day .

Is he just not very good at mating perhaps? Low testosterone? Needs Viagra??

Iv had hens for about 10 years as layers, but finally brought some purebreds and a rooster so a bit inexperianced with the males.

Sounds like he may be hen-pecked

Ah, I'm sorry, couldn't resisit!

Some roosters are quieter than others. My two cochin roosters rarely, if ever, crow. My Speckled Sussex rooster only crows if he is bragging, other than that, early morning.

Now my bantam roosters crow non-stop, and they start at 3 am.

As for getting with the wrong hen, chickens are like people. Hens will pick their rooster, and vice versa. My black sumatra rooster paired up with my cuckoo maran hen, Elizabeth, for the longest time. It irritated me, because Elizabeth was supposed to be with Monroe. I fixed that by penning Elizabeth and Monroe up separate from my Sumatra.

Your rooster is also young, so he may just be figuring things out. I once had a silkie rooster who would chase all the girls, and for the longest time never caught a one. He finally managed to catch one, grabbed hold of her feathers on her head, flipped over her head, and did his duty to the ground infront of her  He finally figured things out, and I bet yours will, too.

Yep, I second that! He is young and he picks on the most submissive female because that is all he can get! If he continues not to crow much, I would breed him and sell the resulting male offspring to folks who cannot have chickens in town! :D
