And I hear ya on Houdini. I've had animals get out and not been able to figure out how or where.
 
That growling you hear? That's DH being very, very envious about your stove. ;)

I think what you're describing is what we call "gropple" up here... it's collapsed snowflakes
 
grapple huh, I've never heard of it called that. i basically just called it cold. remember the tomato and pepper plants that i had moved into the storage shed, well they got a little to cold too on those low teen nights and aren't going to make it to the greenhouse after all. kinda black and mushy. dang it!
 
What a shame. I had some plants I had been going to dig up in my garden and never had the chance. It got too cold for them as well.
 
yup, the weeks worth of teen temps caught me by surprise. there was a lot i didn't get done. I'm going to start a couple of tomato plants in the house and then move them outside to the greenhouse. never done that before and will let you know if it works.
don't know about your house but the ladybugs have been swarming at my house and they are several different colors. basic red, bright orange, pale orange, almost black dark ones, chartreuse green, and od green. some have spots, some don't but there were literally millions of them in the air. you couldn't walk outside without getting them all over you. kind of like 'the birds' but with ladybugs
 
I'll bet your tomatoes will start just fine in the house. In fact, I need to start some myself.

Last year I had ladybugs that made their way into the spare room that the grandkids use. And - wouldn't ya know it - my grandkids are afraid of bugs, lol. Any other 'critter they would be all over...but not bugs...
 
Do you have a heating pad? If so, stick that under the planted seeds to start them. They'll sprout much easier and quicker if you do that.
 
Be wary of those chartreuse "ladybugs" with black spots... they may be cucumber beetles. I had a lot of trouble with them when I gardened in CA.
