I'm not sure how this string fizzeled but I came across it while exploring the idea of getting one of those #10 can sealers. In the past I have been using new paint cans to store dry goods. The reason is if it can keep the air out of paint it will probably do fine for dry goods. While researching the topic, I found a post on an LDS site that "sang the praises" of using paint cans. Among the many good things cited was the ability to use them multiple times. I am now even more convinced that paint cans are the way to go.
If I can find that post, I'll put a link here. Her math is wrong with respect to the cost with each use but her conclusions are good.
