I lost about five hours of work. I got so furious that i threw it off the apartment balcony, smashing it on the pavement below. It was ten years before i bought another computer. They have improved a great deal.

As a transcriptionist, that phrase "you have performed an illegal operation" which appeared regularly despite not breaking any laws, I quickly learned I would lose a lot of work. So I formed a habit which I still have, which is when you begin a document, always start as your first task, naming the file. Then periodically during your typing, just hit Ctrl + S every now and then and your work is saved. Nowadays computers auto-save a lot more, but I still name my files and Ctrl + S quite often. I was writing a story for advanced creative writing class at the university using Windows '95. Suddenly, a message popped up: "this program has performed an illegal operation, and will shut down."
