Tell ya a story about a dog and a bunny? One of the neighbor kids was playing with our baby bunnies and didn't close the cage and one plopped out. We didn't know this at the time and we were all outside at dusk, playing and working, when one of the boys noticed my dog, Lucy, acting funny.
She was standing at a full point (Lab/GP mix, so think bird dog), frozen onto a corner of the rabbit barn. We went to investigate and found our bunny huddled in fear of this looming white monster rudely pointing her nose and leg at her!
I don't know what would have happened next if we hadn't been there.....I've seen her do the same thing on rabbits in the wild and then give chase, so who knows?

Sufficient Life
I'm sorry you lost your pet. It's hard.
I don't know about others but I always get depressed around time to send the kids off- I call it "freezer camp" because I have a hard time simply saying the truth- I am killing some sweet (and not so sweet) animal to eat it. I feel very bad about it for awhile- even grieve for them. I feel like a monster sometimes.
But I do it. I take the best care of them I can while they are here- I call the vet and spend way too much if they need it. I trim their feet and worry about whether they are happy- but I do it.

I'm so sorry this happened! I think what hurts the most is the way it happened....one pet went after another. The brutality of it might well be the worst. Its one thing when they pass peacefully in sleep, or get sent to 'freezer camp', because we never see the wounds or the blood, hence, no harsh trama.
I remember when I was raising meat birds, and put them in the killing cone. It was so weird,.....I held the head, placed the knife where it needed to be, then looked 'elsewhere' to do the deed. I don't mind blood at all, but couldn't 'look them in the eye' when doing it. Maybe I'm a weirdo, haha.
I guess you could consider it a lesson learned, and now you know where your limits are....at least for today.

i think there is a difference between a friend and livestock. even if its just the way you think about them... and i'm sure it was horrible to find your little pal.

Dec. 18, 2009 Christmas is coming!!!!!
Not much going on around here. Working on cleaning up the house. De cluttering a bit. Seems like I do this often but never really get rid of it all. I woke up with a headache. Tension in the back of my neck. Hummm I wonder what thats from?
Today is the last day of school for the older two kids. Ugggg... Not sure what to do with them next week. Grandma talked about Sea World one day. The kids all have passes so it's a no cost day. I was thinking about having them make Viking Shoes. No, not with my sofa. I was actually thinking about hitting up the good will for some kind of coat. We'll see.
I did a ton of sewing last week. It comes in waves and once I get the bug watch out. We attended a Christmas party last Sat so I made and embroidered an apron as a hostess gift. Then I had some fabric I picked up a long time ago for new kitchen curtains. Made a couple of valances and a matching under counter curtain for my laundry. Then I made a flannel nightgown for dd 4yo. I had found a great piece of mini mouse flannel at the good will awhile back. Really thick and soft. Turned out great but she refuses to wear it. It's still a bit big. DS ended up with a pair of flannel pj bottoms that used to be a queen flat sheet. We don't have a queen bed any longer and it was great flannel.
I managed to finish my shopping this past week for Christmas. I spent way to much money of course. What's new with that. I told my dh I wanted the kids to enjoy their last Ca. Christmas. He grunted at me.
I sold 4 dozen eggs yesterday. It was great neighbors and customers come to my door and hand me cash. I give them eggs. The only problem is they were the only eggs I had. I need more chickens again!!! I was thinking about Modern Pioneers make money advice. It is really something so small I could do so easily. I just need to order the chicks and be done with it. Whey they show up on the door step I am sure that would get my dh moving on another coop real quick.
The farm I have been eyeing forever has a "make offer" on it now.
If I could just figure out which direction we are headed. I tried to talk dh into acquiring it somehow. Maybe a owner will carry loan. We have two scenarios.
#1 Our solar business takes off in the next couple months and I get my farm as a second home, retirement, SHTF place. DH already said if the solar went big I could do this.
#2 Solar flops and we need to sell our current home and hit the road. Therefor said farm would already be acquired and waiting for us.
Sounds perfectly logical to me. Except I have never been to Mo. Or seen said farm in person. Hummmm that could be a problem.
Well I guess I should be canning or doing laundry. I have another 20 butternut squash to process and two more heritage pumpkins. busy busy busy!!!!

I HATE making lunches!!!! Vacation for me....
Ok, back to reality. Your farm dilemma sounds interesting. I have no advice, but I do envy the potential opportunity! I think your hubby's plans/thoughts are pivotal on this one. Obviously you can't move forward with out his blessing. It seems like he is just not ready to really make a decision. Maybe that is just a sign to slow down and take it slow. Perhaps this is not the right farm or perhaps energies need to go to the solar co. first??? Just tossing out ideas.
Good news on the egg front.....more chickies huh? Fun stuff! I need to start working on my plan for next year. I have got to get more chickens as my dwindling little flock of three can not support my family of 6. Gonna have to convince hubby and DS to build me a nice coop though. Ugh.
I hope you have a peaceful week next week....at least your shopping is done!! I have more to do but I am getting close

Thanks Dace. All is well on the home front. I know the farm is a pipe dream but... One can dream right? I used to dream of chickens and a big garden.
No packed lunches for the kids next week but dh will still need to eat. Shucks!!
You know the whole chicken thing. If I buy say 50 layers from McMurray they wont be laying until May. But buying pullets cost more. I definitely could recoup the cost in eggs rather quickly. I just need to commit and get on with it.
