My daughter and a bunch of her friends duct taped one of them to the side of a building several years ago. They had a blast doing it, and the friend was all for it.

Speaking of Saran Wrap. I was watching some turkey processing videos on Youtube the other day. Yeah kinda sad but not much else going on around here. Anyways, these two old guys were trying to hang this big old tom from a tree. When they cut back to the video it looked as if they used Saran around the wings and body. To keep the tom from flapping.

And I can speak from experience on the strength of those wings. :smack

I thought it was a cool idea, especially if your not using a cone.

Morning Gina.....are you guys on spring break like us? My kids are really enjoying some much needed free time. My 8 yr old is definitely in too many extra curriculars....gotta find a way to cut back.

I have a mater question for ya. I was reading that here in SD, we should plant a second crop of tomatoes in early to mid June in order to extend our fresh tomato harvest into oct/nov. Do you do that?
 
Hi Dace. Yes we are on spring break. :he Glad to hear your little one is doing well. Down time is nice.

My kids are camping on the porch in a tent nightly and I am trying not to strangle them during the day.

Well tomatoes, hummm.. Last year we had cool weather for so long my tomatoes really did not get going until may/ June anyways. I can see how if all conditions were ideal a second crop would be possible. But if your first plants are growing vigorously and doing well they should still be producing in Sep/Oct

I don't know if that answers your question or not. Sorry. There are just so many things to consider. I guess this is just one more reason to keep a garden journal.

Ok I went and looked at my photo folder. Late Sept my original tom plants were still producing. It was the 26th when we had that heat wave and hit 110. I am sure tomatoes were picked after that.

I would say if you have a space in mid June and want to have tomatoes later in the year. Then why not plant another?

Well I am using pots, so space is technically unlimited.....but, can I keep them thriving in pots is another question! I think I am going to look for a heat resistant variety and give it a go for later in the season.

From what I have read our maters will not begin to fruit until nights get above 55..... The count of days until harvest begins then. So far I have flowers but night time temps are still too cool for pollination. Most of what I read also seemed to indicate that production (in our area) would start up in July and peak in aug, then peter out. So a few heat resistant varieties should keep us in fresh maters thru nov. It has been a couple years since I had a real garden but it seems to me that all the tomatoes were done before that. Guess I need a garden journal too.
