My meaties are about 6 weeks old too....we were going to butcher them in a few weeks, though.

What are you feeding them now?

thanks Java. Living on a hill has good and bad. I think the view is in the good category.

Gleno, I have fed the meaties everything from chick start, chick grow, grower, and now I am on my 2nd or third bag of game bird crumble. I refuse to buy any more feed. So this morning they got sprouted grains mixed with strong kefir. These birds ate a lot more than I anticipated. Mine will be 6 weeks on the 14th. I need to get them a bit bigger. But feed is expensive here. Next time I will find an alternate source of feed.

So I finally singed up for Photo Bucket. I have been taking pics with my phone and could not get them on the computer. Then the pics I would try to up load only worked sporadically. Anyways you all were right. Its much easier.

Here is the new poult hut. I wanted to use all upcycled materials. dh hated the idea of using the pallets but I think it turned out great.

Dh also built the turkey hens a new box. There are 10 more eggs in there.

I think that poult hut looks great!

We're still on the chick starter mainly because it's 20% protein. Next we're going to the finisher mix, but also going to give them scraps from the fridge.

Your garden looks great, I can't wait to get mine started now that the endless rain stopped long enough for me to get out there and get busy.

Thanks. Humm I never though about the start having the highest protein level. What can I say, I am new at this.

Yes they are natural hatch bourbon Reds. 7 weeks old I think.


Here's my apricot tree this year. Its covered.

Oh, and I stole the crate I used as a brooder and planted it with a few berries yesterday. With a cattle panel for them to climb on.

Great pictures. SO was impressed also.
I got some meaty chicks on sunday. Our farm supply store had red broilers. I hadn't planned on getting chicks, but since they had these ones, I got 6 and 2 wellsummers. They are now being cared for by Mandy, our buff orpington. She had been broody for a little over a week. She is such a good momma. I gotta get some pics of her.

You lose 30% of live weight at slaughter. Guts, feathers, feet etc. weigh more than you'd think.

Through scheduling issues, my first meatie batch went 10 1/2 weeks. The processor said "don't do that anymore". The roos were too big for his equipment. We weighed one roo in at 12 lbs the night before "the trip". They dressed out larger than some young turkeys we've had....
