I'm with the naturopath -- in general, feet are made to support us without the benefit of lots of padding, arch support, etc. We tend to mess them up by wearing shoes all the time. Here's an excellent article that explains a lot of it very well (somewhat long, but worth reading): http://nymag.com/health/features/46213/

I never wear shoes in the house. I work in an office job so I have to look presentable, and I have found that lots of cute little flats are pretty close to being barefoot. I also just got a pair of Vibram five fingers last weekend. DD got a pair too -- she's thinking of training in them for her fall cross-country season, so I also got a book about "barefoot" running. The shoes are truly weird looking; I wish they looked more normal. (DD, on the other hand, loves the look and has worn them to school.) But I really like the fit and the feel of walking around in them.

Here are some other "barefoot" shoe options: http://www.terraplana.com/vivobarefoot.php http://www.softstarshoes.com/index.cfm Alternately, you could get a good pair of moccasins.

The thing about transitioning to a no-support shoe is that most people are so used to being in shoes that the transition should be very gradual to avoid pain. When we wear supported shoes we aren't using the muscles in our feet to do the supporting for us, so the muscles are weak; sudden reliance on those muscles can cause arch pain. I'm pretty used to shoes with little or no support, and walking around the neighborhood in the Vibrams can still make my feet tired. And you have to re-learn to walk properly (without landing hard on your heels, which people tend to do in cushioned shoes). Wearing the minimal-sole canvas sneakers or other low-padding shoes make that pretty easy to learn. (If you wear them for a few hours or a day and your heels hurt when you walk, you are probably heel-striking too hard.) If you build up to it gradually, your feet -- and likely your legs and back -- will feel better over time.

Sorry for the long post -- it's a subject I've been "into" lately. ;) Hope your feet feel better soon!

Keens all the way. It is the only shoe I wear to work. If you order from Zappos you can get free shipping even if you have to return them. They are great to order from. I have had to return 3 pairs at one time to get the right shoe and there was never any problem with returning them.

! don't wear shoes in the house either.. and I wouldn't outside either if I could get away with it. In southern calif when I lived there it was flipflops all the way.

Now I like my sloppy Justin work boots in the winter and in the summer a pair of slip on new balance sneakers. I always wear slip ons or clog like shoes.

I use to really like new spirit shoes, due to their really soft inner sole that stays soft... but they are kind of spendy so I don't have them often, I'm too far from the city to find good sales.

I LOVE my Vibram Five Fingers.
Great for running/walking, hiking, watersports, anything!

I have very weak ankles, and I haven't had a fall/twist since I've started wearing these and strengthened my ankles/feet/calves.
Gotta work up to them to give your muscles time to adjust, but they're great.
They produce a completely natural stride, and I have *much* less next-day pain after a workout with these.
Good for yoga, too, if you don't want your bare feet on the nasty gym floor.

Hmmmmm. I might have to try the Vibrams she's pushing me to try after all. My left ankle hurts almost constantly after I've been on my feet.
I do have one pair of Keen's too. They're more wintery so I haven't worn them in a while. They are pretty comfortable.
I used to be able to wear New Balance but those haven't felt as good since I put on weight.
Thanks for all the other suggestions too. Food for thought.

I love keen's as well, I find them more roomy in the front of the foot area. (I hate my toes getting squashed) I always suggest new Keens from grandparents for the kids Christmas etc.. really nice roomy toe for the kids.

I like burkenstocks, but haven't had any for a while. I bought some Sketchers (shape-ups) a little while ago, and I think they're causing pain in one foot, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my vibrams. Cannot preach them enough. They have changed my life! No joke here. I was a dancer for years, to the point that my little toes are kinda.... wrong. Tiny leather dance shoes do that I guess. Anyway, I have super high arches, but my ankles and feet have never been stronger than since I've started with the vibrams.

On a daily basis I often wear a broken down pair of tennis, because they're quick to put on and don't get any looks and keep my feet warmer. We've been having a cold spring here. Whenever I can though, it is my vibrams. (It's getting easier too, they're getting popular and so fewer people stare/ask questions).

Okay Vibram lovers, do you have the synthetic ones or the kangaroo suede? I do like the MaryJane style that Occamstazer posted the picture of.

Shoes?!

It's summer!! Barefoot all the way!!

Unfortunately, as I found out the hard way, some places require you to wear shoes when you enter.. What's with that?? Germs I suppose..

I almost always go barefoot around home and outside. I do have a pair of uncomfortable sandals for when it is wet out, and a 'good' pair of sneakers for into town, although they are falling apart.

In the winter when it is cold inside I wear moccasin boots. Outside I wear huge giant clunkers.

I guess I have no favorite shoes.

I've had mine over a year though, before they even had the suede. I live in a WET place, so suede is a total non-option for me anyway, unless I want them to rot. I have the same style that occam posted, the sprints, in blue/sage green, in a 38 I think. LOVE THEM. The Boyfriend has the black KSOs. The mesh on top hasn't held up all that well, but then he is brutal on his footwear. I may do a KSO as my next shoe. (interestingly, his black ones are often overlooked as abnormal footwear. Kinda blend in).
