Chickens are more of a hindrance than a help in the garden, that's for sure. I wish I could train them to dig their dust bath craters for me where I want holes lol
Have you tried wrapping fine chicken wire around the cages? Provided the plants don't grow through the wire, or against it, it should be safe.
