I have a contact at the County Soil and Water District HQ. Saw her this week for discussion about a project for the volunteer gig. She said if I sent her an email with my driveway situation, someone could assess and provide recommendations.

Stay tuned

I decided on some grass cover. One of my contacts at the soil and water district gave me a bag of grass seed used for erosion control.

We have, however, discovered the previous owners covered up major erosion ruts in the drive. The super heavy rains exposed the issue - they had just filled the ruts (12+" deep) with loose gravel that washed out. We are getting quotes on fixing it right.

IMO a driveway like that is going to need some large enough rough aggregate to stand up to flowing water if it isn't ditched or otherwise set up along the edges to take the water off and down the sides or to spread it out into the surrounding lawn... then you have the next issue of getting the ditches to not wash out or arranging those dispersal areas properly. water can be very destructive if not managed properly (as these floods in river floodplains have shown yet again).

the real good and proper answer is to reshape the entire uphill areas to divert water away and to reshape the drive to shed water in ways that don't turn it into yet another damaging issue... which is way outside the scope of the immediate problem and issues... :)
