Lala - I make that soup too! It's a family recipe and for some reason hard to make just like Mom/grandma/great grandma does. We just call it potato soup, and our "noodles" are just lumps of egg dough that we call rivels. It's on the menu for tomorrow I think

Javamama, and there isn't any seasoning in your family's soup either?

I'm just about to start grating onions for the soup, makes my eyes smart just to think about it. guess there is a reason to grate them instead of mincing, so I'll grate away.

AL, in a couple of months I'll be so jealous of your sunny warm weather....but right now the cool feels kind of good.

Nope, just salt and pepper to taste and dried parsley. Has to be dried Mom always adds a chicken bouillon cube, but I don't use them anymore.

I just made your cake again! Hubby said it's "dangerous" I love how easy it is.

The soup was good! a bit bland, but more salt and fresh ground pepper helped.

I went online and looked for info about it, sounded like everyone who ever made it/had it/whose grandma made it had a north dakota connection.

The chicken arrivals went fine - there has been the "to be expected" sparring going on - the newcomers came from a big big flock and are pretty agressive - mine are pretty much wondering what the hell happened, and congregrating in a group at one end of the pen under the pines.

And poor Emma, a little mixed breed banty with about 16 toes, is getting the worst from everybody. If it doesn't get better in a couple of days I'll have to rehome her or find her a buddy her size and set them up in the spare coop.

Also, the mustard filled eggs didn't deter the egg eaters, with all of mine jumping into the next this morning ( I was there at dawn to supervise the waking up of the mixed group) and sampling it.

I know the only thing to do with egg eaters after you can't cure them is to cull them, but.....I'll just keep this a closed flock. I've tried golf balls, and now the mustard filled egg. Any other ideas?

buck wandering in the garden at sunset

frost killed the garden a few days ago, so didn't care about the buck eating the garden

fresh apple cider and cheddar cheese on crackers for supper

I got cream for my coffee in the morning

no wolf at the door

going to sleep like a rock tonight

lots of squash, pumpkins, gourds, kale, and leeks to share

life is good

yuck yuck yuck

yesterday I noticed the sole banty had feet in terrible shape - she is a rescue with feathered feet and I've never been successful at eradicating the leg mites with her despite strong drugs, daily topical treatments, etc.
So after about 6 months or so, I gave up and resorted to just cleaning off the debris every month or so. But I have neglected her the last couple of months, to my shame.

Anyway, I spent 2 hours this morning (after coffee, before breakfast) soaking her feet in epsom salts so the dead tissue would pull away - it is a gross process.

She is a mixed breed with toes sprouting everywhere on her feet and feathers too. Sweet chicken, her eggs are so tiny and are all yolk with a tiny covering of white.

She was a trooper through the process. ish.

more chores today, but it is gorgeous out!

oh no, what have I done!

drove by the flea market, not stopping, until........free kitten sign. that truck just yanked right over and parked.

two tiny orange male kittens....my 17 yr old cat is missing my 20 yr old cat that I had to put down....

made the mistake of actually picking up one of the two kittens left. went home with both. dang. that is stupid.

stopped by the local vets on the way home to price out vacinations and neutering.

think I'll skip the rabies vac since they will be indoor cats (outdoor cats kill too many songbirds). but ouch! this is going to be expensive.

right now both kittens are hiding behind the stove. funny, that is where my cat hid when she was a kitten (different house) and home for the first day 17 years ago.

my cat is pretty p'oed at me too. And I deserve it!
shoot. I'm pretty irritated with myself.

I'm almost afraid that I'm going to come home with more than 2 goats when we go to pick them up. Shh, pretend I'm not thinking about doing that...
