I'm somewhat envious of the organization you guys have. On paper/physically, I'm a very disorganized person, but everything is fairly well organized mentally, lol. My instructors at school (the decent ones) had commented on how I'm one of the worst people for organization, but have one of the best memories they've ever seen. I make up for my lack of organization with my memory, lol. I could give oral reports on any client (including clients that weren't my own) but gosh damned if I could get that written out onto paper.
My DS#1 was exactly like that! They ran IQ tests on him, and he was at genius level - if every test was done orally. As soon as he had to get it from his head to paper; not so good!
That's where I'm at. I had to have the IQ tests as well, because I never did homework or anything. They thought I was way below average, only to find out that I was WAAAAY above average. Unfortunately, public schools cannot handle kids like that... They hold them back, instead of letting them progress! I was actually supposed to be put into algebra in 8th grade, but the school held me back based solely on homework. My test scores were above everyone else, but since my overall grade was low because of how much they take from homework, they wouldn't let me progress. The school was SUPPOSED to be working with me on an IEP, where they weren't to be counting homework, but whatever. They finally switched me part time to another school. It was a VERY independant school, where they handed you a year's worth of work at once and you did it on your own at your own pace. I finished up two or three years of math and English in about a week (see, now my memory is failing me, lol). I probably could have done it faster, but they would only give me one year's worth of work at a time, instead of just handing me everything at once. It was fun though, because they did have "teachers" there for when you needed help, you could ask them anything. Ironically, the students soon learned that I knew more and was a better help than the "teachers" there, and instead of asking the teachers, they all started coming straight to me. Even in nursing school, the girls always came to me instead of the other students or the math instructor. The one instructor was talking to me the one day when a few girls came up to get help with their math during clinical hours... She's like "usually, math takes a LOT of organization, which you obviously are very lacking in, yet you're simply amazing with math, and you even do it in your head!" That right there was the key though, I can do it in my head very easily, but I can't put it on paper! The one instructor had actually given me a "free pass" with showing my work in math. I told her that it was very hard for me to show my work, because half of the time I forget to write down "steps" because it's just automatic for me... I don't process through different steps, I just "know" the answer. The one day, she "caught" me after school teaching the other girls, and she's like, well, obviously you know what you're doing, so just write down the steps on any problems that you actually have to think about and then we'll be good. Once in awhile I'd have a step or two written down on the homework, but for the most part, I just wrote the answer, and she was fine with it, lol. Of course, she's seen me do my math homework, so she knew I wasn't cheating or anything. I've even found a few mistakes in the math book.
Anyways, long story short, public schools cannot handle "special" kids. They have special things in place for students who have lower IQ's, but they have NOTHING in place for kids with extremely high IQ's. Some of the things they do for lower IQ children work for higher IQ's, but it's not perfect by any means, and mostly, they just hold the kids back and then wonder why they sleep through the classes out of straight boredom.
