What did you do in your orchard today?

Occasionally, early takers show up. I no longer try to understand why, I just receive it. Late blooming cold hardy plums are all the rage around here nowadays 😆

I might need to weigh down my boots so I don't blow away - the winds are crazy today! 👀 But the peach trees are exiting their fruit drop/pit hardening phase, and it seems the wind is just helping shed the fruitlets that didn't form pits. Yet another reminder to observe, appreciate, and refrain from complaining! Things are not always as they seem. After sampling a couple early ripened cherries, I decided to come inside and get out of the wind. Wind is gonna do what wind does anyway.

Figs are ready to leave the barn tack room for some outdoor pampering. While moving those heavy pots in an 8-foot room is a bit of a challenge, I plan to put them on pallets and use the tractor to manage them outside this year. I'm currently trying to figuring out the best long-term solution, as I believe they really need to be planted in the ground for next winter but they need protection from prolonged hard freezes. IDK... perhaps they will bear a few figs to eat and that will motivate me even more? Hard for me to believe the were just 4 to 6 inch plugs a year and 1/2 ago. They grow crazy fast.

it was sunny windy and warm here too today. nice day for doing something that didn't involve fabric or plastic blowing in the breeze (unless i were flying a kite perhaps, but i wasn't :) )...

Plum grafts are outside in semi shady spot to harden off. They need sun to help them grow big and strong. I like to use a kiddie pool for easy of watering. Put it on a pallet for moving around with tractor is easy also.

Rich May Peaches, this tree is growing all kinds of funny, but who cares? We aren't here to snack on the wood! It's peaches are thinned out and busy putting on flesh. If all goes well, we'll be enjoying Rich May peaches by late May or early June 😋. Though I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch. I don't chew my cabbage twice, and I certainly won't be eyeing these peaches until their cheeks are soft enough to pluck right off the branch and slide down into.my belly. A lot can happen in the next few weeks, so I'm just praying nothing goes wrong!

Apples are mostly thinned to 1 to 3 per cluster 🍎 I focused on leaving the king if it was worth keeping. I discovered that thinning apples was best done with my thumb nail. I mean who doesn't like apples? I dont think I could ever have too many apples. They are so easy to give away.

I think I mentioned plums and apricots got zapped by late freeze this year. I need to reseach late blooming apricot varieties to help avoid zaps in the future.
