What did you do to be/become more self-reliant today?

I planted peas yesterday - for the second time. My first batch with 8 year old seed was a no go. Hope to have better luck with this planting.

Such a roller-coaster weather situation this year! I keep looking at my stack of seeds, hoping, WANTING to plant--start plants.
Late March here is about the most reliable!

And it's like 15 below zero over here.... LOL We're in a warm snap now just below freezing this week and then back to cold for us. I get so jealous every winter when I see posts about others starting their gardens!

We were below freezing all week. Today, was warm, wet and windy! And, it's supposed to stay warmish for awhile. So, I may have a chance to get out and do some cleaning up that I didn't get to in the fall. If I can get it all done, then by mid-March at the latest, I'd be able to start things like peas, potatoes and onions!

Put some seeds into pots yesterday!! Used own, home-made composted soil. Everything needed was here...no gas or money used to go buy. Potted in some veg containers, some cups I had left from food sampling demo, seeds have had from previous yrs, sales, etc. A few containers from previous buys that had been saved (stashed away?) Have some bottoms of containers that had been damaged on tops (previously free from Wal-Mart & had had cake icing in them) which I plan to cut down (with saw) to put more seeds into. Recycle.

Garden, garden, coming soon.......

Hard boiled eggs from own hens, milk from goats, garden working. Frozen veggies from summer still in freezer....

Life is good! I give thanks for my Blessings.

Yesterday I got some mini greenhouses from Wal-Mart. I can fit 4 of those on my seed starting mat. I tried using empty egg containers, but they just took up too much room. This way, I can start 288 seeds all at the same time! Any starts I don't need I can sell.

Sounds wonderful! I'm thinking of growing a little something on the windowsill here, maybe a tomato plant or two… I have some herbs on there already. Outside space is difficult with it being small and occupied by chickens already.

O.K. the little something turned into 3 tubs with potatoes, beans and carrots… I cut back on the mealworm farm a bit and had some empty tubs here waiting to be put to good use, so I bought a bag of compost and started planting. The carrots are starting to come up, the potatoes are looking good and the beans are taking their time still. I only put in a few taters and beans and probably too many carrots. We'll see how things go

Isn't it amazing... you think it's gonna be a 'little something' and it turns into a little something more!

Yeah… I'm going to have to buy more compost to fill that potato tub and the compost comes in huge bags, so I'll have loads left…. who knows where this is going to end up!
