What did you do to save $ today?

I'm canning cream of chicken soup. Last time I made it I figured out that it cost me 12 cents per pint but this time I bought clear jel BUT I'm using home grown chickens BUT I didn't get the mushrooms on sale. I'm guessing it's going to end up costing about 15 cents per pint but I won't know for sure until I actually get it in the jars.
For supper tonight the kids are making their own little pizzas. Good entertainment value, good food and we didn't have to go out to eat (not that we ever go out to eat anyway but it's a plus).

Awesome deal on the soup! When I see the price of canned soup in the stores, I'm amazed that anyone buys it, even on a "good" sale.

My best childhood memories are NOT of eating out, but of things like you do, making pizza at home, participating, etc. One of my favorite meals that I still remember....and my mom told me years later it was when my dad was out of work for a year and they were completely out of money and almost completely out of food....my mom put bits of this and that on the table and we made our own lunch from what was there. Crackers, a bit of tuna salad, a little meatloaf, a few scrapes of peanut butter, whatever leftovers were in the fridge and cupboard. I didn't know it was desperation, I only thought it was genius! :P
 
I talked the DW out of stopping at the store on the way home "just to pick up a few things". :lol: Convinced her to identify exactly what we were out of and stick to those. Because she was having a bad day, I thought she might jump on me for "questioning her judgement", but instead she laughed out loud and agreed. :D
 
I LOVE this website! I have a quick question on the homemade laundry detergent. I made some and want to add fragrance. How many drops of essential oils do you add to how much detergent?
 
I went to Whole Foods and *only* bought the yogurt starter and black peppercorns that I went there for. And then I went home and had lunch instead of having lunch out!

:welcome If memory serves me correctly, it is not advised to add the essential oils, something about the scent bieng washed out ora something. I could be wrong, maybe someone else will chime in. :)
 
I'm making diner from FREE deer meat! woot!

The onions, potatoes, and mushrooms to sautee with the deer were bought at the store though... But I bought them last week so no money spent today... right? :lol:


As for the laundry detergent... I wouldn't waste the Ess Oil on the soap... but maybe put it in the rinse cycle to get the clothes all nice and smelly... :D

I make mine and researched this. You should use fragrance oils that are safe to use in soap, for instance, those sold by soapmaking supply companies, so that they are safe for use on skin. Some essential oils are not safe especially inexpensive ones.

If you make your own laundry soap with Fels Naptha, it is not unscented, it is rather reminiscent of Dial. With Zote it has a nice, light pleasant scent.

I choose to purchase dryer sheets with scent and add fragrance to my laundry this way and I add baking soda to the load when I feel I have things with especially bad odors (I have lots of pets). We have also added vinegar to the rinse instead of fabric softener, but I did not care for the odor....it reminded me too much of salad!

The homemade laundry detergent does not have a lot of odor but does seem to remove bad odors.
