What did you do to save $ today?

I made nettles soup from the nettles on our property and leftovers in the fridge. It was great and good for my sons to learn survival food!
 
Actually I spent money today to save money later. I ordered a pound of vanilla beans. I have a big jug of vodka already. I'm going to make some vanilla for me and then put beans into some cute little bottles that I already have to give as gifts.
 
Went through my coupons and matched them with the Safeway ads and ended up saving about half the grocery bill.
 
We decided to try couponing again. I am going to ask the good neighbor for his newspaper flyers, so I can check the ads for the sales and use coupons on those items.
I checked online and the store that usually has really good prices and even better sales, doesn't list their prices online :/ Even our pricey store has some good sales. If we didn't have to worry about money, we'd rather shop at the pricey store, since that is the organic store and they have great knowledgeable staff.

I started making stock using the turkey SO shot a few weeks ago. The meat is too tough to eat. I filled our biggest pot with the parts and carcass, added a mess of herbs from the garden and some home made white wine vinegar and let it simmer all day. The house smelled so good.
I had to use wine vinegar, since I ran out of ACV. :( I will be on the lookout for unpasteurized apple juice, so I can make more.

I also had taken 1/2 of the breast meat of the turkey and seasoned it and rolled it into a roast at the time of processing it. Last night I covered it with bacon strips, added more seasoning and we had it for dinner. The meat was still a little tough in some parts, but overall it was more like a pork roast and everyone loved it.
 
SO is beginning to catch onto this saving thing!!! The last few times he cooked, he asked, if I wanted to save the cooking liquids, from asparagus and potatoes. He finally realized that they make great additions or even bases for soups and gravies :ya
I put them in canning jars and freeze them. Or if I am canning something else anyway, I will add the jar to the batch.
 
Bought a $50 terracotta "tuscan oven" that I've been wanting forever. Paid $4.99 at Goodwill. :cool:
 
Just went to five different stores to do a few errands (dh usually does them as I tend to swoon at prices....which I did) and came out of 3 of the 5 empty handed....no way I was paying those prices. Or they didn't have what I needed, basic supplies to make things. I got suet for rendering instead and shavings for my brooder. I'll get the other few items later in the week when we are going by the discount store anyways. SHEESH!!!! :ep How do people afford to live without being ss????

I agree. I get sticker shock every time I go to the store.

I managed to get 3 1/2 quarts of turkey meat put in the freezer for the dog. The stock is back on the stove to extract some more goodness from the bones. I will add some more parsley and garlic greens to it momentarily.

I also pulled 3 buckets of weeds from under the electric netting and fed it to the chickens, which are now confined in the chicken yard. They are still only getting some grains in the evenings.

Gotta go hang up some laundry now.
 
Ok, I went to the grocery store, the one with the really good sales and usually has good prices. I knew they had sugar and flour on sale, but not how much. I brought a handfull of coupons. I only wanted to stock up on a few items, since I don't have much money.

I ended up saving $24, by buying sale items and using coupons. I paid $34. And I managed to get the good quality butter at less than the cheap generic stuff, which was also on sale. :weee
Fortunately I had 4 coupons for that brand of butter and got 4 packages.
Does anyone know if butter freezes well? Because if I can get myself to only shop for stuff that is on a good sale with coupons, I could definitely save us some money. I haven't seen a store around here that does double coupons. I used to really make a killing, when the stores had double coupons.
 
I invented a meal out of leftover food I was almost going to throw away. My meal plan for today is kicked to tomorrow. Free food! Woo hoooo!
