For sure:
lots of tomatoes
pole beans
broccoli
all varieties of peppers
onions

This year I had so much trouble with bugs on my cruciferous veggies. They took over my brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, cukes, squash, etc. I got nothing out of any of those plants. So much time, space and money wasted that I don't know if I'll try again.

I planted peas at the wrong time twice, but I would love to try again. Carrots maybe if I dig a new bed for them.
I'm terrible at succession planting for lettuce, so I don't know.

I would really love to have pickles, but I don't know how to defeat the bugs. I tried everything but row covers this year.

my hubby has been hiding the garden porn from me. i found a stack of seed catalogs under his "Rider" magazine.. whoot!

next year i am going to grow brussel sprouts if it kills me. and i will defeat the Evil Empire Of Squash Bugs (guinea hens - check!). and i think i need more maters for sure.

i'd be very happy if i could grow a livestock beet - one of those mangel variety... i usually just mangle them
;-)

and i'm going to get my grains in gear for barley and grains for the hens.

whoot! is it spring yet???

does anyone have any suggestions for good books on intercropping/companion cropping?

this is my first year with complete control of a garden. i've always had to tack things onto my grandfather's garden or start one at my parents' house, which inevitably gets taken over by my father (who isn't interested in most of my "newfangled" techniques). that's the trouble with multi-generational farming!

this year, after 27 years, i have a whole plot of land all to myself! so i'm determined to try new things. i've been doing research on companion cropping, but my library is hopeless and it's nearly impossible to choose a book from Amazon.

I want guineas next year for these, potato bugs and--worst of all--squash bugs!!

I sprinkled my fall brassicas with a good dose of baking soda. A fellow organic grower swears by it, and it really did seem to work. The caterpillars are supposed to explode, or their stomachs, or something like that :D

I'd love to learn more about this but haven't had impressive success with those I have interplanted so far...

I think I enjoyed "Carrots Love Tomatoes" or something along that line. Good luck!

I TRIED a garden 7 times last year... we had a drought, then freezing weather and bugs... Gardening is hard for me because of all of the bugs...

I am older and have walking/bending problems due to health issues...

But I want another garden...

I tried raised bed but that was a disaster not deep enough.

Its so expensive.. I was thinking of using a tiller to break the ground and planting.. What can I use to stop bugs? That is natural the pesticides do not work for me... Please advise a garden for dummies... I am terrible on gardens ( or the weather is) but oh boy ca I grow chickens!) Please help!

First, it will really pay off for you to visit our sister site, TheEasyGardener, link found at the bottom of this page. Those folks have all the 411 for any kind of gardening you may want to do! You will probably find more folks in your situation over there...but we all surf there too! :D

If you can tell where you live, what you've tried in the past and what kind of soil/growing conditions you currently have, we may be able to suggest something helpful.

I use companion planting to help with my bug problems, mulching to help with droughty weather, and a mixture of other methods to control the persistent bugs.

I will be finally setting up a drip irrigation system this year and hope to have my little scrap greenhouse built this winter. The drip irrigation will help with dry weather conditions and the greenhouse will help me harden off seedlings, grow some cold weather crops at a working height without them freezing.

Tell us how you tried gardening 7 times in one year? :hu :)

I tried them for the first time this year. Despite putting them in a bad spot (not enough light) they did surprisingly well. I am going to grow some of these next year too. They are great for a small space since your crop ends up vertical. Just think of how much space they would take up if they grew like radishes?

As for bugs...I have a unique way of taking care of them. I use moats. Yes...moats. I container garden using the water that goes through my pond filter. The containers sit on flat trays filled with pea gravel. They wick up the water from the trays. The evil pill bugs, earwigs and slugs can swim the moat :D

I also got ducks and they seriously cut down that slug population. Of course the ducks can do just as much damage as the slugs if you don't fence off the plants...LOL
