Ham bone in the instapot right now. Ham and bean soup tonight. The wife wanted fresh, so hopefully her appetite is coming back.

Question of the hour....can suitable cornbread be made with milk if there is no buttermilk? Have Martha White Hot Rize cornbread mix.
I know better than to have the Jiffy cornbread mix boxes in the house... 😀

Yum!

You can make cornbread with milk - or you can make buttermilk, or more correctly, sour milk out of your milk by adding a bit of lemon juice or white vinegar to the milk. It will curdle it for you.

SUBSTITUTE FOR BUTTERMILK IN BAKING

Measure one tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice into a liquid measuring cup. Add in a scant cup of milk and fill to the 1 cup measurement line. Stir the mixture together and let sit for 5 minutes.

Or

Mix 3/4 cup plain yogurt with 1/4 cup of milk. Stir and make it a quick substitution for buttermilk.

Good luck!

DW impulsively bought buttermilk from the store off a coupon. I have no idea what to do with it. Anyone have any good, trusty waffle recipes? Or anything else? there is a half gallon of it!! crazy woman...

well it shouldn't spoil easily... so you can keep it around for a while. we don't ever buy it here because we use the other methods mentioned already by others. we almost always have yogurt, lemon juice or vinegars.
