I had watched one of those. Thanx. But unfortunately all I can see on any of the videos is someone cutting open a chicken and digging around inside of it and hopefully pulling something out. I can't really see what I need to see happening inside the bird.
I am gonna hope for a class, but continue practicing on dead animals until I feel I have got it. The last one was particially successful. I had trouble with the hidden testicle, but did fine with the one closer. I don't want to make 2 incissions. I think it would just be too tramatic.

I wanted to learn to caponize also. I wish I was still in LA, then maybe we could have gotten together LOL. I was in Hammond. I tried to get FIL to show me how while I was there, but we never got around to it.

I have a few publications explaining how to caponize cockerals. I also have the tools, although I don't care for how the separators are made. I have done as the books recommend and practiced on a dead rooster and was partially successful, but I had lots of trouble and couldn't completely catch the second testicle.
I have wanted to learn this surgery for over 20 years, but I can't find a book with good visuals or locate a teacher.
I really would love to find out about a siminar, with a little class offering caponization techniques, even if I'd have to take a train to go. I haven't gone on a vacation in years anyway.
I will check from time to time if anyone responds here, but if anyone discovers how I can learn this surgery, and a year or so has gone by, please e-mail or pm me. Thanks.

I am a nurse, so I have inflicted a lot of pain on a lot of people... in my life.
I'm sorry Rhoda, I just COULDN"T pass up that one...you know how we doc's are... :hide

All levity aside, though, I just did a search and got this video. Couldn't play it at my "current location" but thought it might be helpful

I have found that for whatever reason, if there is something you want to learn to do, youtube appears to have it. I have been amazed at what is available on youtube. If I turn on a TV, it is only to get my computer to find youtube and learn something rather than be narcotized by commercial TV.

The most recent example of this was the other day. I wanted to learn how to sex baby chicks (yes, I'm up to 6 now, Yaaaah!)
The wing trick appears to be the easiest and least annoying.
Soooo youtube for me! Hope this helps.

I have viewed the byc's pics and it was a good topic, but I find the pic too hazy and the exact place I really need to see isn't presented as sharp as I need to see it. I have caponized several dead roosters for practice, which I killed to slaughter anyway and I have 3 to kill now, so I might get more practice.
I obtained a very old book, which is out of print, which I find most helpful of all my publications on caponization. "Capons and Caponizing" by George Q. Dow. C 1890. After doing the procedure a few times prior to reading this book, I was able to understand the things the writter was talking about, based on my experience and he was able to keep my attention. But the kit I bought isn't exactly like the writter's kit. He has an instrument to remove the testes that I feel superior to the one I have, which is the same type as in BYC's caponization thread. I may be able to use my surgery kit, but I feel I would like to add to it by somehow obtaining a different tool to remove the testes.
I really wish I had a caponizing buddy or teacher. But I keep on getting closer to where I want to be relating to SS subjects, so one way or the other, I will learn this procedure and preform it on a live bird.

Rhoda, If you haven't perfected your capon skill, maybe this article can lead you to 1 of those 6 specialists,
http://modernfarmer.com/2014/04/cap...piece-agriculture-somewhat-disturbing-luxury/

maybe worth contact Mr. Schiltz. http://www.schiltzfoods.com/AboutUs.asp

Would you know are the chickens (usually lives about few weeks) for indoor commercial grower use only gals? or straight run? if only gals then what happen to the cockerels? I found posting saying they are sold for as little as 25 cents.

I'm exploring capon chicken as full time venture, have you ran across any info regard that? Thanks.

Sorry....I had been away a good while an didn't realize one of my older posts had a new suggetion. I will check it out. Got so much on my plate that wasn't so,when I origionally wrote this thread's origional post.
I came on the livestock section today because I wanted someone to refresh my memory on the subject of cornish rocks.....what is the roo an what is the hen?
Just wondering. I have a cornish bantam but not sure the sex and a single white rock hen. A friend can probably set me up wih a cornish roo though. I don't like waiting forever for my meat to finish out.
One of the reasons I am so interested in learning how to caponize...
