What did you do in the garden today?

My garden looks like crap... I need to get in there and work it... But I can't seem to find the time

I had a tall (like 10') sunflower fall over in the garden yesterday. It has seeds already so I cut the flower off and put it in the layer yard. Stupid chickens have no idea what to do with it... and to top it off - they all looked at me as if I'm the dumb one for putting it in their yard. Crazy chickens - they will have to figure it out I guess..

A guy does all this work planting something they love to eat and they don't even know what to do with it. Maybe I am the dumb one after all...

We always dried them for a week or so after cutting. Made getting the seeds out easier.

LOL...mine prefer I actually get the seeds out & serve them!!

My slicing tomatoes just started to ripen. Yesterday, I picked 2 and stopped to fill a couple water tubs on way back to house. Laid the tomatoes on a wooden box near spigot...no chickens around. Did a couple things waiting for fill up & forgot tomatoes. Fed the goats, remembered them & went back. Still no chickens but, some had been there & eaten 3/4 of each! Today, it rained all day -- I went to work. This evening while doing chores, I checked, saw 2 more almost dark red, picked so I could have them. One was right against the fence -- yep, they had pecked into that side. Still good, fresh eats...brought it in and cut out that spot!

I read somewhere that a lady used to take hand sized rocks and paint them orange & red, place around tomato plant areas BEFORE hers were ripening. The hens tried & since they got nothing, lost interest. she reported almost no loss to fruits as they turned color. Nice! gonna try next yr.

Did pick another nice butternut....they are growing very quickly with this rain, now. Have 4 in house now. Need to cook one. AND my limas are blooming magnificently. Looking forward to those beans!

Next year ----- I will have more variety and crops. But I don't want so much it is overwhelming. However, do want to can again & that requires more than just a "eat from it for summer" size garden. Since I haven't gardened for several years now, this one is amazing and an incentive. Also a reality check for "time & work" needs. Only a couple plants of whatever for this year.

Yes I see all those peppers...in the bed of your truck? Just wait until those butternuts start to ripen. You will be overjoyed! I am CERTAIN you planted enough for the entire community. Yep, I can see you do that.
