@CrealCritter - How did the Alaska talks with the kids go at Christmas?

Only two of my sons want to go in on the purchase. I'm still thinking if I'm going to go through with the purchase or not. I need to make up my mind by Jan 4th, when I go back to work and talk to my boss. I really want to purchase the property but it's hard to justify with only two of my sons wanting to split the cost with me. I have the OK from the Chief Financial Officer (wife) but that doesn't mean I'm going to go through with it.

Probably a good thing that you're giving it serious thought instead of just jumping straight into it.

Yep... The only thing holding me back is the cost of shipping for a successful hunt or fishing outing back to southern IL. My boss told me he paid dearly to have moose meat sent back to the the lower 48. It has to be sent back frozen and remain frozen during the whole trip back, they charge by the lb to ship it to the lower 48 and it's very expensive. I don't have a plane, nor have I ever even tried to pilot one. The property is pretty much useless if I can't afford to ship the spoils back home. You know a mature moose can get up to 1500lbs on the hoof. After processing, your looking at upwards of 900 to 1000 lbs that would need to packaged & shipped back frozen. I don't hunt just to hunt. if I'm going up there to hunt, I'm gonna eat it.

I just found this thread. Im from Parkersburg, too! Grew up right across from Belpre, OH! What a small world. I lived up there til about '93 and have been in Tn ever since. Last time I was up there it had changed so much. Big ol' overpass over the Kanawha River. Couldnt wait to get out.
Did you go to PHS? I graduated in '82.

No, Rammy...never "lived" there except as a baby for first yr or two. Then moved as dad was Navy. Loved to visit. :) I haven't been back in -- gosh, maybe 20 yrs. Not many family there still a kickin'. :D Mom was last to pass, couple yrs ago, at 91.5 yrs. She'd been living here in VA over 65 years and with me for about 5.

Sure is... And you can't let illusions of grandeur cloud your thoughts either.

Yep. The isolation is too expensive, in this case, IMO.

My late DH caught a huge sailfish in FL one year and of course, they said "oh, mount it!!" He did and flew it home ($$$) to VA. I told him he had to put it in his office, as a conversation piece. :D:D So, after he passed, his kids wanted ME to take it..... NO WAY! We all laugh about it and just said we were glad he had so much fun. Don't know what ever they did with it. Dumpster?:lol: I just know that between the boat trip, mounting, special crate, shipping....that was about a $3K fish. Couldn't even eat it! Over 25 yrs ago.

the internet says about 48 hours of drive time to get to Alaska from the US. Guess that would be an option, except that to get to the property you would need to fly in and out...

Well I'm not going to buy the property in Alaska from my boss. It was a tough decision but it's probably for the best, I guess. It could be one of those decisions that later on in life i'll say "I had the opportunity back in 2018". :(
