I have some tattler kids, but have never used them. I keep a stockpile of lids, have tons of jars. If I ran out, I guess I’d be using the tattler or doing a lot of dehydrating.

For me, shredded coconut. It lasts for ages and I use it in cooking and cakes. Not that I have been doing a lot of that lately - but if there are no shops about its something I need in my pantry. Cheap to buy in bulk too. I use a lot of coconut milk as well, the cans take up more room than the powder but they are easier to have on hand.

I've heard it said that bread was invented when someone burned the beer, lol

Kind of makes me think, what I could do with spent malted grains? I eat a handful, they were mighty tasty and chickens sure do love them. Maybe next time I brew, I might try and mix some in with pretzel dough and see how they turn out? Any other ideas?

I bet shoveling spent grain at a brewery is a young man's job.

There are recipes on line for making dog biscuits out of them. That would be a great cottage industry for a kid... or any human, for that matter!

Makes me wonder who is lobbying for this regulation. Follow the money trail! My cynical guess: those who stand to profit from forcing farmers to buy more costly feed. Yet an other case of government regulation that stands in the way of good stewardship and common sense. Any readers used spent grains? I've only been able to access several buckets full in the last 10 years. Wonderful stuff.

Who knows... It's a stupid proposal.

I'm currently seriously considering opening a 1 barrel pup. My grown adult kids have been hounding me to take my beers public. A one barrel pub, is were you brew beer one barrel (30 gallons) at a time, with love. I'm currently talking to a buddy who owns a BBQ joint about bringing his BBQ and My beer under one roof. I would like to do a German Themed Pub but who knows where it will end up. I know I could easily sell pints for $5.00 each and pretzels $1.00 each maybe even more than that. That's about $1200.00 a barrel plus pretzels.

Here's a link to a similar pub that I've been thinking of --->https://www.onebarrelbrewing.com/ but they sell their lower gravity brews for $5.00 for 10oz. higher gravity brew go up in price per 10 oz.

There are several local brewers within 1-1.5 hr drive that GIVE their spent grains away. But, they want you to take many barrels full and I just can't use it all. Not enough people around who would "go in" with me. Shame, free except, of course, time & gas. Lot of weight to move & another consideration. Plus containers, etc.

Sometimes "free" isn't. LOL

Actually, you can make your own coconut milk from the shredded coconut. I've only done it once, because I already have several cans in my pantry.
From Wellness Mama's site:
Ingredients
Instructions
  • Heat water until hot, but not boiling.
  • Put shredded coconut in blender or Vitamix and add the hot water. If all the water will not fit, this can be done in batches.
  • Blend on high for several minutes until thick and creamy.
  • First, pour through a mesh strainer to remove most of the coconut solids. Then squeeze through a towel or several thicknesses of cheesecloth to remove remaining pieces of coconut.
  • If you had to split the water into batches put all the coconut that you strained out back in the blender, add the remaining water, and repeat.
  • Drink immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days after making for best flavor and texture. Since there are no preservatives or fillers, the "cream" of the coconut milk may separate on the top if stored in the fridge. Just shake or stir before using.
