Several of the fires appear to be arson. Others, the cause is still unknown. We just spent 8 hours manning a control point near Chiloquin, OR (424 fire) to keep people off a closed road. No more active fire there, but there were hot spots that needed to be mopped up, and a lot of dead trees needed to be taken down before they blocked the road. Also a few very large boulders came down and landed in some areas. Less publicized, but equally important-- we were there to help prevent looting of the evacuated homes.

Most people were unhappy about having to take other routes that added hours to their driving time, but mostly philosophical about it. At least one guy got really incensed though- told both DH and I "F*** you both". He came back later (maybe hoping we wouldn't be there?) and ended up cussing me out again and nearly running me over as he crashed through our barrier. Luckily, I had his license plate and was able to notify our Incident Commander... last I heard the Sheriff's Deputies were looking for him.

The number of people who have lost their homes and businesses has apparently grown to 4 digits. Air quality is off the charts.

We also noticed that the Portland nightly riots pretty much went away at the same time, although there are fires being started there as well.

Have you noticed that some people are claiming the fires are being caused by climate change, but they almost completely stop at the northern and southern borders? Apparently Canada and Mexico are not suffering from climate change. I thought we were all on the same planet (although sometimes I have my doubts about California)

My sister lives out in Idaho. She sent me a picture of a fire area, one side of the road was "un-treated" and the other was treated with commercial thinning & prescribed fire 3 years before. The fire totally burned just about everything on the un-treated side while the "treated" side has considerably less fire damage. The fire crowned (tree-top burn) and jumped the dirt road where it dropped from the canopy and decreased in intensity as it traveled through the treated area. The trees in the treated area are alive and will recover.

In times past, it was understood that careful logging and grazing along with controlled burns kept fires to a minimum. Granted, some logging companies were greedy and lazy and clear cut entire hillsides, but on the whole, logging was done reasonably. Before the european settlers, the Indians did controlled burns of bushland to keep fire danger low. It used to be that a 15,000 acre fire was considered a major fire. The last several years, we've been seeing fires covering 100,000 acres in greater and greater numbers. We have about 2000 deaths (that I've heard of) so far in Oregon alone, and I am hearing rumors that it may be considerably greater.
Unfortunately, we have had an entire generation or more who's ideas about forestry were garnered from Disney movies, and they have forced their ideas on letting Nature take it's course on everyone else, and we are reaping what was sowed.

I visited southern California when my son-in-law was stationed at Camp Pendleton. It was the nastiest air I ever witnessed. Washed my wife's car, the next day it looked like I didn't even wash it. The water on Camp Pendleton was not good either. I'm not trying to be biased but I never seen so many plastic women in one place before.

In California, specifically in Hollywood, they practically worship "beauty", although it's a very specific definition of beauty that has nothing to do with natural beauty.
