Milk has been "stabled" due to govt price controls. The farmers are dying with cost of feed increasing way beyond what their piddly buy of raw milk does 😵‍💫😡

Yeah butters, cheeses, etc up. Meats 😱 gonna get worse.

Now, we're getting grains with chems not allowed in USA (imagine that 🙄) which cause fertility issues in animals! So, people? And we can't even tell. Contents do not list treatments before the packaging. We are being fed poisons.

I keep looking at piglets :idunno hate the thought of them again and I have the space, sheds, fence; just another to feed & care for. BUT was some of best pork ever!!! And lard. Yeah, I keep looking, thinking...I'll cave eventually!. My butcher closed shop, so that's a slow down for me. Need to find another processor.

Me too - but I haven't jumped yet, lol. I don't have a problem processing them myself if I do it while they're at a reasonable size. I prefer NOT to do a 300 pounder by myself, but I can do one at around 100 lbs fairly easily. Less pork, yes - but less feed into them too. If I bought feeders I'd grow them out - but when you've got the factory it's pretty easy to justify doing them at a smaller weight.

Didn’t you sell the factory?
Thinking about buying back in?

I did! I'd have to start over. I swear it's not in the plan at the moment, but I catch myself watching Craigslist all the time, lol. It won't happen until I do some reconfiguring of pens around here. Or, I could let 'em have run of the pasture and pond, hmmmmm. :gig

And it's a JOB to do!

My processor would do "kill & chill" at $40. I'd go back & get gutted, scraped hog; hanging in cold room. I did have them remov head & halve down backbone to make easier to handle, plus fit in containers. Took home on ice and cut/vac packed it. Still a job. 🤷 Sharp knives & saw needed.

That made it doable for me. :old cleaner job too

Sawzall is your friend!!

That's really a great deal. I didn't realize you were getting them scraped. We just skin 'em. I would love to have a scraped one - but no way I'm going to deal with that myself, lol!

I can have one skinned, gutted and sectioned out in about an hour. It's the cutting and wrapping that takes so long! I store my hogs in an ice chest for several days after cutting so I can take a little time cutting it up.

It's doable - even for a woman with a few years under my belt, lol!
