Are you planting a fall garden?

I have brocolli, collard, chard, and cabbage plants under lights and will be transplanted this week if the wind dies down. They are really leggy so don't know if much will come of them. Planted turnip greens but it was so hot they haven't come up yet. I am going to try to clear a place in the...

    Stock up alert!

For those of you with a local Rural King- Hills Bros coffee, the big can is $6.49. We went yesterday and bought 10. While we were there we encouraged 2 older ladies to try homemade laundry soap. I am older too so don't start on me but I am so happy with my no smell, no itch, economical soap that...

What did you do to save $ today?

Went to Kentucky Saturday to Aldis and saved a bunch on canned goods, not to mention their 0% tax on food. Also saved on cigarettes and probably blew all savings going to an Asian buffet but I was craving bad. Haven't really gone any where in months.

    Water...treasure

I took a bath today and after seeing my $80 water bill for last month I filled 4 gallon jugs to water my tomatoes and peppers. I will never let that water go to waste again. Now to convince my husband, nah he uses too many products.

    Pressure canning DISASTER

OK this is really sad. Has any body fermented thier tomatoes overnight? I didn't salt but did put in 2 Tbsp of lemon juice. They smell OK. Or am I grasping at straws?

    Pressure canning DISASTER

Maybe the jars were too full or the canner had too much water? I would water bath can but don't have a pan deep enough to do quarts, only pints and I am out of those. Nobody got hurt, my jars didn't break now to clean up the mess. I have mourned long enough. One more- my precious heirloom...

    Pressure canning DISASTER

OK I am still a novice of 1 year pressure canning so I confidently go about setting up my tomato quarts. Now I did successfully can 16 quarts last year so I am not freaking or anything. Well at the end of the 15 minutes for crushed tomato canning I shut her down and wait for the pressure...

    Red Hot Apples

Any one tried a light sugar syrup with the cinnamon candies? I found a recipe I made when my kids were small (now all in their 30s) but the sugar was 6 cups to make four pints. These apples are already pretty sweet and it is for me and DH and we are not sweet eaters. That old recipe is something...

    Red Hot Apples

Hubby brought home a free 50 lb. box of apples. I made apple sauce already and want to make cinnamon apples but my Ball Book recipe calls for corn syrup and I have none and town is 10 miles away. The apples were sweet enough to not need extra sugar in the apple sauce. Would it be safe to omit...

Concord grapes a million of them

Picked all my grapes yesterday and tried to process in my electric juicer, a fiasco of grape seeds flying every where. Then I tried the foley food mill with disaster again. So finally filled my huge pasta pot and boiled for a half hour, tied the pulp in ruined kithen towels and hung over every...

    Where do your hens nest?

Most of my hens lay in the nest boxes. My Astralorp "Queenie" always lays on the riding lawn mower if she can get to it while free ranging. She will follow my husband when he is mowing and try to hold it until he's done. I always have to check the tractor before locking up. She will pace like a...

    What are you fermenting today?

Just put the "Nourishing Traditions" kimchi recipe in the fridge. I grew regular cabbage so that was what I used. Turned out good enough that I will make more. My frozen ginger root is over 6 months old and still great. Will be making more fermented black beans with lots of garlic. My fridge...

Dehydrating Fruit - How to store it

Do make sure to use a glass jar with a canning type lid. Last year I dried a boat load of fruit and veggies for Christmas presents in ziplock bags only to find them contaminated with insect larva. Very disappointing to say the least. Plastic bags of any type are not for long term.

Square Foot Gardening.....Does Anyone Else Do This?

Loved square foot gardening in the city. Actually gave my copy to my son when I moved and now have 3 acres. I still do a square foot raised bed for carrots radishes and beets. Do need to amend the soil more frequently as it is harder on the nutrients. My son is a solid convert. Your look beautiful!

What did you do to save $ today?

Saved myself a ton of money last week turning down a fence company's quote. Got a new egg customer and was telling him how I need a bigger run for the chickens because of stray dogs. Lo and behold he's been fencing for years and made me a ridiculously low labor offer. So I will get my fence at...

    SOUP - the thread!

Making a big pot of potato, chicken, jalapeno and whatever else I find soup. We had roast chicken on Sunday so doing the stock right now. I just threw the rinsed shells from breakfast right in the pot. I will strain it when it is done and the chickens get the solids. I can't really find lots of...

THE OFFICIAL GARDENING AND PRESERVING CHALLENGE

Just saw sprouts of dent corn for the chickens. Here in rain soaked TN I finally got green, lima and wax beans in. Sunday I hoed up and planted the 50 sweet potato slips I ordered. Got several heads of cabbage ready and waiting to see which are brocolli or collards since I lost the labels...

    SOUP - the thread!

Since having my own chickens I have been putting clean egg shells in my chicken stock mix. It doesn't change the taste but I see a lot of milky looking stuff at the bottom of the jars that I assume is minerals. I read it some where and have never been able to find it again. I didn't want to use...

    What is this veg?

I grew it last year and it was difficult to get to head. Wasn't terribly impressed but our weather was not cooperative. It will be grown for chicken food this year because they don't care if it heads and I have a lot of seed left. Mine wasn't very pretty like your picture.
