got a grain mill, now what ????

I live in NC and get my wheat from two different sources. The easiest for me is from an Amish store in Elkin NC called Yadkin Valley General Store. Last summer I could buy a 50 lb. bag of Wheat Montana Prairie Gold for around $35. I'm sure it's gone up since then. Wheat Montana Prairie Gold...

    Spring Cleaning!!

Loved SCA. Think I still have bruises from it. Well, still feel them anyway. That's where I learned how to brew my favorite beer and sew. Yea, it's time to start spring cleaning. Think I'll go through my old clothes this year to see what I can use to make rags and quilts. Been meaning to...

My First Batch of Pickled Sausages

When I was growing up in Upstate NY during the 60's every country store and beer joint sold pickled sausages along with pickled eggs and pickled pigs knuckles. They eventually were replaced with the advent of Doritos and the Slim Jim. They still sell them in some convenience stores. Pickled...

My First Batch of Pickled Sausages

When I was young I loved eating pickled sausages. Then in the 70"s most of the makers started putting soy protein in their recipes. Due to soy (legume) allergy I had to stop eating them. I've been craving pickled sausage for years and decided to make my own. I used this recipe: Pickling...

    Electronic Cigarettes

The batteries last about 4 hours if you "smoke" moderately. The batteries can be used for 3 to 6 months of continuous recharging after that their capacity to be charged diminishes considerably. They are relatively inexpensive being around $10US. The normal charge time for each battery is...

    Electronic Cigarettes

I have and use an e-cigarette. Been using it on and off for several years now. E-cigarettes do not burn anything. It is an evaporation process just like boiling water. A nicotine containing fluid is wicked from a reservoir to a heated coil and boiled into an inhalable vapor. It's a pretty...

    What's Your Favorite Comfort Foods?

I'm sure all of us have at least one preferred comfort food. Here's my top three. My favorite is a strawberry jam sandwich on caraway rye bread. It sounds absolutely hideous but the flavors work well together. Second favorite is SPAM and cheese pilaf. It's my version of Spamaroni and...

    Excellent video on composter toilets

I really liked that video. Thanks. A lot of folk cringe at the thought of using composted human waste for growing food. Little do they know that all the sludge from municipal sewage plants ends up being sold as fertilizer for food production. I've looked into commercial composting toilets...

    The Nerd Confession Thread

OK, I couldn't let this thread die. My name is Dirk and I'm a total nerd. I've owned 2 Commodore computers, and thought 300 baud was fast. Was in the SCA for several years. I enjoy Father Ted, Red Dwarf, Monty Python and Conan movies. I watched all of the episodes of "Farscape" back to back...

    Anyone make their own Spray-N-Wash?

I always have a spray bottle of homemade spot remover handy. I make the solution using my normal laundry detergent with a Tbsp of borax added. If the stain does not release immediately then I scrub it with a small brush. Fingernail brushes work well for this task. If the stain is very...

    My Favorite Chicken Marinade

I know it's not spring yet, but I always like to think of what I will cook when the warmth returns. For some reason looking out the window at the ice encrusted snow makes me want to break out the grill. Both sides of my family have been grilling this recipe since before I was born and I'll be...

    Egg recipes...

Egg Drop Soup Bring 1 cup chicken stock to a rolling boil. Beat an egg in a cup then very slowly drizzle the egg mixture into the boiling stock. Season with black pepper to taste. Some folk thicken the stock a little with corn starch before adding the egg.
