    I got chickens!!! :D

So I finally got to go to the local feed store and get my pullets. I got a production red, barred rock, and golden wyandotte. I haven't chosen names yet lol but they are so sweet. They don't do a whole lot, but I guess that's the stress. I have pics posted on BYC if anyone's interested. I do...

    What's everyone doing today?

What am I doing today? Supposed to go get my chicks. My bf and I decided to go to the local feed store to get them, though he's at work now so I have to pick them out myself and I'm a little anxious about that. After that it's just a matter of prying myself away from my new babies long enough to...

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

Big thanks for all the input! I heard from someone having a rooster was somehow better, though they didn't go into detail. I think I'll stick with my original plan of 3 girls and no rooster then. A fan...hmm..I wonder if I could come up with something. Oh and just to update it was much too cold...

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

:D He said yes! :D lol I'm getting chickens! And he's going to help build the coop, which is a relief I'm not solo on this project. I'm thinking 2 females and a male. I'm hoping to have a nice weekend this weekend with weather so I can get out there and get started. I guess I was over thinking...

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

So I've been thinking about getting maybe 3 hens...my boyfriend is taking some convincing. I think he's mostly concerned about the initial investment...we'd have to build a coop and I think he's more interested in spending the money on home repairs. I've been researching how to build one and I...

Go "Green" and just hang it up!

Me too! lol Where I live I can line dry most of the year, but when it's cold it's wonderful to keep the dryer hose inside the house. We don't use central heating and the dryer hose(dryers in the next room) reaches right to the living room. Works great!

    What's your fav. deer rifle?

Hmmm...my bf was saying he thinks I'd like a 30.06. Never fired one so I don't have a clue. I did watch a youtube vid on one and the guy seemed to talk them up, uh a remington 710. Also said its a good tactical as well as deer hunting rifle. I think I really need to get out and shoot a few...

    What are you DEHYDRATING today?

I cut them up and then blanched them. Also regarding the oxygen packs, I think that they are needed for long term storage to extend the shelf life, but I doubt you need them if your not thinking long term. In another thread I was asking about storing them in soda/juice bottles but don't, bad...

You guys are awesomesauce! I have some great ideas now. And Dawn Thank you for the link, very much!! I was going to go ahead and use them for dehydrated foods until I read it. FYI if you didn't read the link DO NOT store dehydrated foods in soda/juice bottles. Botulism risk. eek! I'm really...

2 liter plastic bottles, a lot of

I decided last fall to start a garden this spring, so I was just waiting on it to do the last freeze. I think that's a great idea, to start them in plastic bottles. Though would that work for starting any vegetable, or only some types? I have seeds for carrots, beets, potatoes, and onions. I...
