    Help me love turnips!?

A friend of mine gave us a bag full of turnips from her garden. We don't grow turnips here and the one time we tried them (honey glazed) we thought they were disgusting. After years of hating brussels sprouts we tried some at a restaurant which were roasted with onions and sugar and we...

My poultry house for 62 birds... and a couple 1sts.

Just eggs right now. Plan to do meat in the future, too. As I mentioned, we're going to sell about a third of the flock. Want to keep the laying flock size around 40-45 birds.

My poultry house for 62 birds... and a couple 1sts.

Updated photos... Had to go out and buy a grommet kit and elastic straps today. My tarps are over-sized and I need to trim them down. Then have to build the rear window shutter and cover the tarps in chicken wire. Need to back-fill in the spaces around the base. Then sand & gravel on the...

My poultry house for 62 birds... and a couple 1sts.

Here are some in-process pictures of my chicken house for 62. More likely to be about 40-45 when it's all said and done after we sell a few off. This is also a project of firsts for me. 1. First semi-permanent structure I've built since moving onto my farm 2 years ago. 2. First construction...

    Choosing a tractor.

I'm getting a nice tax check this year and am going to take the plunge and buy a tractor. Budget is $3K but hope to keep it less than $2500. I'm needing an auger and grader to start, and I'd like to get an endloader or excavator in the near future. Would prefer a live PTO, power steering, and...

Which BIG potato variety do you like to grow?

We grew Red Pontiac and German Butterball last year - my first time planting potatoes. Didn't grow very big but they were good. I wasn't sure if the small size was my fault or a trait of the potato. This year we are growing more of the same because we liked them so much, but I was thinking about...

    Solar Leasing

Are solar leases a good option for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills and reduce dependence on the grid? Given that 1. The technology that may rapidly become obsolete, 2. Electricity savings would be considerable in the time it would otherwise take to save for them, 3...

    Lost a dog today...

She was hit by a car. I don't recall ever having such a good dog. She was 4 months shy of 3 years old. Sad day on the farm. Feel like the wind has been taken out of my sails. Her fur-sister (pictured), human-sisters, human-brother, and mommy and daddy are sure going to miss her.

    Blackberries and blueberries.

I built 3 raised beds this spring, one each for blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Of the blackberries & raspberries, I can't remember which were thornless. In the 6'x6' blackberry bed I planted 4 canes. Only 2 have survived and they are not doing all that well. I'm wondering if it has...

    egg safety

So what's the correct way to wash an egg? We have been rinsing in water just slightly warmer than room temperature, and obviously picking, scraping off any obvious dirt or debris. We don't use any soap or chemicals, just plain ol' water. Is that right?

Posting for Mom - Grandpa's farm for sale. 60+ acres available in IN

My mom and her brother and sister have my late Grandpa's farm on the market in western Indiana. It's 60+ total acres available in 2 plots. The 50+ acre plot has a homesite on it. The house needs a lot of work for rehab, or you could live in it while you build your dream home. The other plot is...

I was offered some free grape vine starts...

I'm sort of going along the same lines. I just don't have the time to invest in something that has a high likelihood of not producing.

I was offered some free grape vine starts...

She described it as "a fence full of grapevine. I've never seen it have grapes but it is very pretty" and offered to let me take some starts. My question is if it's not producing now, should I expect any different if I take a cutting? I don't want to bother if I can't expect it to grow some grapes.

Anybody developed any useful tools for raised bed SFG?

Planning for next years garden, wanting to expand it while not expanding the amount of work. What kind of tools do you use? I'm thinking I'd like to get something useful for breaking the soil up. Since the beds drain so well, it'd be great to have something that is good at breaking up dry hard...
