    Chicken processing setup score!

Thanks, folks. I went up to Norman expecting to find some old junk for the price she was asking. Almost didn't even go. But SO pleased we did. This will make our system so much more professional looking. My current setup, I'm okay with customers coming to check out our setup. With this one, I...

    Chicken processing setup score!

And Buster scores again. Got this setup on Sunday for $900. Not a great price, but it will look good at my place and certainly do the job. Besides, it came from one of the sustainable broiler pioneers of Oklahoma, so it has a strong legacy and will be put to good use. Pickwick plucker ($8,885...

    so...meat chickens

There are highly successful pastured poultry operations that do day range and use polytape and plastic electric fencing posts with a few t-posts for corners. They space the tape/polywire 6 inches off the ground and 6 inches apart up the post to near the top. They can make it as large as they...

MEAT BIRDS THREAD ~Plans, pics, pens, pluckers, processing! GRAPHIC!

Okay, I know everyone has lost interest in this thread, but thought I would update since we are nearing completion of our spring meat bird project. Finally. We processed most of the last of the last batch of Cornish Cross this morning, with the help of two of our customers and their 8 year old...

    Packaging birds.

Poultry shrink bags I order from here: http://www.cornerstone-farm.com/equipment/poultry-packaging/shrink-bag Poly bags are simpler to use as you don't need to heat water to use them: http://www.cornerstone-farm.com/equipment/poultry-packaging/shrink-bag Cheaper here, but you have to buy in...

    Turkeys are Fragile

No, that's about dumb owners, not dumb turkeys. When turks are in the last stages of hypothermia, their necks bow back, which in this case makes them look up as if looking at the rain that their dumb owners didn't provide protection from. By the time they are at this stage, it is far too late to...

    why do you own horses?

No doubt. In my eye, it is something I can eat or provides something I can eat or that does work around the place, like guard or kill mice. Horses certainly can be practical, though. A friend owns a ranch and uses them to check on or move his cattle, especially in rocky terrain where a four...

    why do you own horses?

I prefer more practical animals. I have a couple that aren't, but they are small and cheap.

    Turkeys are Fragile

They are fragile, until they reach about 8 to 10 weeks. Then they are some tough birds. Superbirds. Almost indestructible.

MEAT BIRDS THREAD ~Plans, pics, pens, pluckers, processing! GRAPHIC!

I understand how you feel. I helped my mom process birds when I was a kid, but that was over 50 years ago. The first time I did it as an adult, it was very difficult for me. In fact, every time I had to process, I would get in a bad mood and clam up, no talking to anyone, approaching the deed...

It will send you one notice it is updated until you log in again to check it. Could be you missed one notice, and since no subsequent notices were sent, you didn't realize there were more responses? I like the new BYC notification system. If you set it to Immediate, it sends you not just an...

MEAT BIRDS THREAD ~Plans, pics, pens, pluckers, processing! GRAPHIC!

Just to update on my meaties project... We have now processed all of the first batch and half of the second, with a little over 125 left to go. The plucker helps a lot. We've sold and delivered most of those we have processed, with a good percentage of the remaining live ones spoken for. They...

I've heard good things about Welp from producers. The hatchery does matter. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm not sure you save anything if you save a dollar on chicks, but have to spend an extra two to raise them... and then get less meat in the end.
