2dreams - Its Spring In Mississippi w/pallet bed pic

Harvested my basket of taters today. So disappointed. There were only 8 little white taters in that whole big ole basket.

While I was moaning and complaining about all the wasted dirt for 8 taters my DH said. Well, Wanda, they are white potatos. I looked at him with my "what the heck are you talking about" look. Of course they are white potatos. Its what "WE" planted. He then informs me that white potatos do not do well here.

Well, hello, now he tells me. A million pounds of dirt later.

The really funny part is that he knew this all along and let me pet, and pamper and dream about my taters. I really wanted to turn around and :smack him.

Hopefully you can find a tater that does good in your soil!
We planted red potatoes....I think. (When I say WE I mean DH did and I just watched....ok half watched from the house!! LOL!) So far the green part above ground is huge!

The potato plants were dead and the really big red fire ants had already started on them. Two more months and there would have been nothing there but an even bigger fireant bed. :he

DH and I are both really frustrated with the garden and weather. Everything is almost dead except the corn. And that is with us watering every other day. It has not rained in over a month. I figure that with all the time and money put into this years garden I could have walked around an air conditioned grocery store, bought high dollar organic produce and still come out better financially. We are planning a short get away in the next two weeks. To heck with it. I am tired of fighting with the rabbits, heat, and dragging 3 150' water hoses all over this 3 acres.

Temperatures are still up close to a 100, and so are most peoples attitudes. Tempers are starting to flare up. Crime is increasing and most of it is just senseless. One of my neighbors works in a pharmacy and she said yesterday that she has started to notice that even her really nice customers are short tempered these days.

You know when the overnight tempature low is still 85, its HOT.

It needs to rain and wash the tempers away.

Oh goodness, 2dream! I hope this means you'll have a mild winter! I read in The Foxfire Book that if you have a hot summer, your winter will be mild. If your garden doesn't do that well, mild winter, if you garden does wonderfully, harsh winter. If the birds are picking the berries clean from your bushes before you do, harsh winter. Cool summer, harsh winter.

It's funny how we can be in the same country and experience complete opposites with the seasons. Our garden this year is the best we've ever had, but I haven't got to pick any of the berries this year because the birds beat me to them. Our weather has been super cool so far...Would be glad to send you our weather if I could! I'm actually dreading this summer, even if I do have a good harvest, because I feel it means a hard winter ahead...and I loathe winter.

My potatoes will actually be ready in about 2 weeks I think?

Wanda,

my Dad's taters were a complete mess, too. He always, always has a good crop. But, just not this year.

And, this is the year I wanted to can some potatoes. :(

Wheee, isn't summer grand? (said with bitter sarcasm)
I'm hating the heat, maybe that explains why DH & I are growling at each other. Your situation makes me very thankful for that hard as rock clay soil that holds on to water. I'll bring you some goodies when I come to rainbow. It will be after the big harvest starts coming in, so I should have some to share.

Your weather sounds just like mine - everyhting in the garden is dead or dying and it hasn't rained in a month. I feel your pain.

I hope your get-a-way is nice.

So sorry to hear about your potatoes and your garden in general.
Have you read this book?
http://www.64dollartomato.com/

Maybe it would be a good read on your little getaway :)

Your summer sounds like mine always is here on the west coast....no measurable rain from may-nov/dec basically. Maybe we get the odd rain come thru but typically we are very dry.

I hope you get some rain roll thru to cool everyone one down a bit and help your corn!

Dace, I wanted to say thanks for mentioning this book. I haven't read it but from what I saw, this guy is a kindred spirit.
